Hi C.S.
The Garman I'm looking at is $530.oo With the chips at $56 each.
The picture is only 3-5/8" diagonally,I am thinking that is a little
small but the price is right.

Garmin make a fine product, I do have the basic etrex and one of their sounders and niether have given me any problems. And I have them in all weather. When I do up grade to a nicer GPS I will get a coloured screen, you can look from any angle and make out the sceen. Unlike a blk/wht. Let alone when you have polarized glasses on. I hope this helps. And keep looking for sales, larger dealer can get the better prices, or even e-bay. good luck.

I have a friend with the Garmin 176c. We fish together a lot and we both agree it is a pretty good piece of equipment. Especially for the money. So, nothing wrong with that choice.

I have two color Chart Plotters, myself, and have used quite a few others, when ferrying boats here and there, for other people. Mine are both from Standard Horizon. The first one is model CP150C. It is a color plotter and interfaces with Furuno and anything else via NMEA. This model has recently been replaced with model CP155C. I happen to like Standard Horizon better than Garmin for two reasons. One is just the controls and screens/pages. They make good sense to me and are easy to use. The other is the quality of the graphics. I have circled VCI with them and they were very accurate and I always felt totally confident in what they were showing me.

The Garmin uses their proprietary chip. Something they developed and I don't think they put as much development money into them as other third party competitors. Standard Horizon do not make their own chip. Instead they make models of plotters that use other vendor's third party chips. After using several different varieties, I personally like C-Map NT the best. Both are Vector, but the graphics and details on the C-Map NT seem a lot better to me.

Just my opinion. Others may feel differently. You probably wouldn't go wrong with either one. But, take a few minutes to check them out.

Good luck and keep us posted on your choice and how you like it.

Hi guys
Thank's for the input. The plotter came out at $920 after all of the alla cart. You only need one chip for the west coast of Vancouver Island @$200 Can. It covers San Juan to Cape Scott. It looks like a fair buy for what I need it for. I will look for a while longer before I make up my mind.

Thank you for the help

Try an expensive dinner and lots of foreplay. Other than that, you're on your own.

Remember, it's called "fishing," not "catching."

I've been looking at gps's as well. Lowrance has 1 chip that covers both the inside and outside waters of VI. Just something to consider.

I just got my new Eagle Seacharter 500C (chartplotter/Sounder)in the mail yesterday. Bought on line in the US($454 US). I spent the last 6 months researching on line and looking at stores and I think that this is the best value for the money. 5 inch colour screen, dual transducer. It takes Navionics Gold XL3 chip that covers the whole island ($189 US)The C-Map takes 2 chips that are $250 Can. each. Just my humble opinion. Now I just have to get out there and use it!

malibu, can i ask how the import transaction went as far
as exchange, duty ,customs and taxes ?
i also believe you can get a better deal shopping on line.
just curious if there are a lot of hidden charges that will
rack up the bill ??

I too have the Standard Horizon 150 colour plotter, great unit, 3 year warrenty, water resistant, very easy to remove from the mounting bracket, nice feature, can't say anything negative.

I have a raymarine system on my c-dory. Thats a little more then what you have budgeted but I use the navionics ships and love them. One chip, the gold xl3, covers all of puget sound, the coast and b.c up to the alaskan boarder. I have used it for the last year, 400 hours on the boat motor, and have never had a problem. you do have to watch it in b.c. about ports. I pulled up a port infromation page about a harbor with gas in the desolation sound. The plotter promised fuel and lodgeing with stores. We went to the location and found nothing! not even a building or dock. found out later that the goverment had tore down the town in 65!!! some one forgot to tell the map guys.

teach a man to fish and he will steal all your best spots.

Reel Easy just wondering how long you have had you Standard Horizon plotter and where did you purchase it, and were you happy with the service? Thanks.

Tournament Proven !

Most of the new coastal cruisers we build we use the Raymarine with radar gps and sounder in one, a tad bit pricey but very user friendly and one chip does it all.

Just an opinion
Cheers ME

R.S. - They charged me $45 GST and border inspection fees for the Navionics chip but I didn't get charged anything for the chartplotter. The store I bought them from charged $15 US each for delivery. There were no hidden charges.Exchange rate was the rate that your credit card charges. The online store I got them from was very helpful and gave quick replies to any questions I had. Good luck.

I'm gonna do the same thing when i'm ready to bite the bullet
big savings...
do you mind me asking which on-line store you used ?
