Cabelas Nanaimo

You have to remember that of course Bass Pro in Calgary doesn't sell salty tackle. It isn't their market out there. I think the Cabelas out here, much like Wholesale did in Nanaimo as well, will be adjusting their stock to the local sports of choice; West coast hunting and fishing. Less Whitetail decoys, more Elk calls. More flashers, less lake trolling rigs etc. The Tulalip Cabelas is the same. It has a pretty decent salty section. I can't wait for September. The way prices are in Campbell River, it is already worth the drive to Wholesale sports for some items that you just can't find here, or are not priced at market value.

Ahhh yes.....

Retirement in 7 years................too long in the wait,

living on beachfront..................too expensive in the purchase

Dream job as the "Greeter" at Cabelas in my Camouflage Smock .......... PRICELESS:cool:

I spoke with a Cabelas store rep in Idaho and he explained that Cabelas stocks fishing equipment based on a 100 mile radius. So if the area does not have salt water fishing, they only cater to the freshwater fishing. I would think that the Nanaimo store will carry lots of salmon and saltwater gear.

I met a kid a couple weeks back who got a job at the Nanaimo Cabelas. He says that they will have a dedicated salt section, catering to our local fisheries. Also said this would be the first store with a department truly focused on our local waters.

I used to buy loads from Cabellas in the states (still buy occasionally and ship to my Blane PO Box), I went to the Calgary store recently and could not believe the premium we pay for having cabellas in Canada.

I'm sure that Bass Pro in Tswwassen will force them (Nanaimo) to peg their prices back - guaranteed they will still be at a premium though!

ThreePer:- actually Basspro in Calgary DOES sell saltwater tackle,....which kind of floored me when I walked in there..........not gigantic selection but there's some there allright.

The two Cabelas in WA do a pretty good job of stocking tackle that's relevant to the area. It took a year or two for the first one to get it down as they really didn't have a clue about salmon tackle. The second one seemed to have learned from the first and opened with the right stuff. For those in the Vancouver area, it's probably quicker to hit the store just off of I5 in Tulalip than it will be to go across to Nanaimo.

Does anyone know who the GM at the Nanaimo store is? I'd like to get in touch with them but can't find any contact info on Cabela Canada website. If know the GM or someone who works there please PM me with their contact info. cheers

thanks the the PM's guys! much appreciated. Looking forward to checking out the big store when it opens in Sept. cheers

Just got $100 gift card for Cabelas for my birthday. Can't wait for sure now, will be worth the drive south just to check out the store.

Hummmm-- my wifes birthday is coming up soon.. I wonder if she will accept a Cabelas gift card.... LOL!

Will never shop at a Canadian Cabelas. Looking for a rangerfinder in the US on sale from 399 to 299 in Canada on sale from 549 to 499. What a ripoff and will never support.
Going to Montana next week and will pick up, even with the exchange it is cheaper plus no sales tax.

I was in the Tulalip Cabellas last year and was not paticularly impressed with the prices. Kent shotgun shells were actually cheaper at Wholesale Sports here in Nanaimo; great store, great selection tho'. I think I'll continue to go the NHC for my salt water gear, they have been really good to me since I bought my boat in 2012. I think their service has more that earned my loyalty. I remember when Staples came to town and put all the little office supply stores out of business with prices that have now climbed beyond what the little guys used to sell for. Wholesale sports will have to sharpen their pencil that's for sure. I hope they can and stay in business to keep Cabellas honest.

The problem with Wholesale Sports is that when they are out of something they can't give you any idea when they'll have it again.

One thing I like about WS in Nan is , they carry a good selection of Apex lures unlike other stores.

I notice that many tackle shops that claim to be a dealer for something often only carry 4 or 5 of said product......and usually it is all the oddball colors you don't want.

Then you ask them about "ordering in".......and it takes two weeks to find out they can't get it because "their supplier is out".

Harbor Chandler in Nan is still my number one "goto"......but I will go to all the other stores as well just to see what's currently available.

HaHa. That's funny, because many of the people I'm working with at Cabela's are from Target. I don't think any of the other retailers in town have anything to worry about, though. Neither of the openings in Saskatoon or Regina resulted in much lost sales at the other, more specialised stores or Wholesale Sports for that matter, while I was living there. They seem to have a customer base of their own.
