2021 Vancouver-Howe Sound-Sechelt Reports Thread

Sand heads.

We’ve hit around 20 pinks. Some really fresh ones good to see. Let 3 sockeye go and had a heavy pop. Started slow but has really picked up after the whales left.
cheer, Rob.

Was out in the pack at the cap and west van area. Two chum and one under sized. Used up a fair bit of bait. Glad I found Canadian Tire in Maple Ridge had lots of bait and only $13.99, not like the $21 at most places. Within the last hour, 2 chinook (12&14 lb) on the same set up in tight near the green can and both 80’ on rigger. One hatchery and one wild. If you’re heading out now this might be the place to go as long as you don’t mind crowds. Oh and thanks to the PA boat with guide in the grey t shirt for getting out of the way when he saw we had a fish on. We made sure to head out of the pack when the last one was on as it took 15 minutes to land. Tight lines boys. Heading in.

Hi all, Have not posted for some time so here are my results as well some thoughts on the Fall Fishery so far. Thank you all for your reports and all the helpful info !!

My results:
Sept 1-3 fished full days at SH and up to NA: 1 x 15 lb Marble spring; 45ft on Anchovy
Sept 10 fished SH for 2 hrs and landed 2 springs in 12-13 lb range, one marble and one red; 45-55ft on anchovy and spoon
Sept 13 fished SH all day, 2 undersized spring, one fat Sockeye all released and 2 huge pin poppers. Landed 1 x 16 lb Marble at 45 ft on spoon.

All fish hit in 130-200 ft in front of green can area. Very hard grind compared to same 2 weeks as last year which was near limits or at least some decent action on every trip.

Albion Test fishery summary: https://www.pac.dfo-mpo.gc.ca/fm-gp/fraser/docs/commercial/albionchinook-quinnat-eng.html
Aug 1-31 2020 = 757 Chinook
Sept 1-16 2020 = 223 Chinook
Total Aug 1-Sept 16 2020 = 980

Aug 1-31 2021 = 1131 Chinook
Sept 1-16 2021 = 49 Chinook
Total Aug 1-Sept 16 2021 = 1180

So, according to the test fishery results, the overall run size was larger in 2021 compared to 2020 for the Aug1 - Sept 16 window; however more fish pushed up the river earlier in 2021, perhaps due to the unusual heat waves earlier in the summer. I guess that DFO may have DNA samples of those test fish to be able to confirm this.... it would be interesting if this kind if info could be shared.
Anyhow, just a theory and hope this is actually a good sign of a healthy run and that we get a higher and more normal distribution of fish staging at the mouth past Sept 1st going into next year (assuming that we even still get that opportunity). Take care and good luck!!!

Had an hour and a half to kill so figured I would try jigging for salmon at the Cap outside of a smaller weekday pack. No salmon hits but what I thought was a flounder as I was bringing it up was actually a juvenile Ling. Tons of small baitfish back at the dock. Never seen so many. Nice to see.

Ok so headed out towards the SH around 930 and as I crossed t10 all I could see there was seine boats so I headed away to points unknown only to end up at the cap by 330. By 430 rods were exploding all around me and still not much to the boat but wild coho when I tried shallow to salvage some dignity.

Finally at 6 pm, the outside rod goes boom and it's on...smiley finally made it into the boat a nice spring, not too stinky marble.

In short, if I can find them anyone can, and it seemed like everyone was out there today.

Seriously you need a smaller bag. Maybe we should trade?

1.6M gusts to 37 knots sounds like a commander sort of day.

I'd be surprised if it lays down that much by tomorrow but the cap could be in play.

Seems like they haven’t released any water from the dam yet. So, there may still be a few fish out in the chuck.
