2021 Nootka Sound/Esperanza Inlet Reports

Took it easy Monday to recover from our trip to Port Eliza Lodge. The fishing was fantastic and Robert, the guides and all the crew at the lodge were great hosts! The food was plentiful and tasty and having our fish all processed, and not having to deal with it at home, sure was nice. Hosting a group of 30 fisherman can pose some challenges, but everything went off without a hitch.
As for the fishing, the wind cooperated long enough for some of our group to head offshore for Hali. Biggest was 36 with the rest in the chicken category. A few Lings and other bottom fish were scratched up on the troll, but the winds did pick up to where only one of the full day's of fishing allowed us to get out to spots that would have been more productive. However, the Salmon fishing was excellent with almost everyone limiting out on Chinook (the exception being one of my brothers who apparently can't count to 4! ) and most people averaged 3 Coho as well. Spots that produced included Sandstone, Pin Rocks and Rosa for the most part. The guides varied their gear of choice, but Anchovy, small spoons and Hoochy's all did the trick. I was fortunate enough to win the derby with a 27 caught on a white Hoochy and the biggest Coho prize came in at 10 pounds. The Chinook were mostly in the 15 to 22 pound range and the Coho mostly averaged 6 to 7 pounds.
Our group ranged in age from 25 to 83 and everyone had a blast. The team game featured the old boys versus the young guns, which was interesting because the age cutoff for the "young" team was 62! In the end the old boys showed their young counterparts that they still have it by eking out a 9 pound victory! This was our first time fishing with a big group in Esperanza. From the service, to the scenery, to the fishing; everyone was in agreement that it was a first rate experience! Will follow up with a few pics.

Got back last night from a two night trip put in at cougar creek and beach camped on bligh island bolth nights. First time in the area weather was alot hotter than I thought. Fished beercan bay to what shows on the map as a Indian reserve south east of camel rock. Good fighting fish started with 2 old wooden peetz reels but bolth packed it in on the second day Biggest fish 21pounds. Coho avrage 7 pounds 10 fish total. Great trip and weather. tried to fish past the lighthouse but was to windy in my 16' aluminum by myself. Green flashers skinny g and cookies and cream spoon 40-90' deep. Beautiful area to fish and explore definitely will be back.

Just did a week at Esperanza. Lots of nice chinook and coho all around outside Low Rock. Lots of fog and wind but the fish were around at the normal inside places. Caught fish on virtually everything at depths of 20-50’. Nice active fish.

Fished this morning at Camel waiting for tide at Gold River. It was absolutely dead. Nothing at the wall or along by San Carlos. A few fish over at Hoiss but dead at Burdwood. Hope it was just the rain cooling things off.

Been in Nootka since Thursday evening.
Thursday night - One small 10lb spring at the wall.

Friday - One 20lb spring at a Hoiss in early am. Ran offshore and got limits on lings and cod fairly quick. Was flat calm out at explosive and red can.

Saturday - morning. Two Chrome 20lb springs and multiple shakers at Hoiss.
Night - One dark 22lb spring (wow they are sure dark for this time of year.

Sunday - morning. Two Springs 18 and 20lb at Hoiss. Ran to San Carlos and caught a dirty super dark 22lb Spring. Let it go. Never seen them this dark this early.

Ran to monument and got a 20lb Spring. Chrome as could be!!

Keep hearing that camel has been good as well. We fished camel as well on Friday but it’s a sh@@ show with wayyy too many sausages out there crossing paths etc.

FYI. (I think it’s a good thing)
Mounties we’re out for a couple day checking boats at camel and Hoiss.

Fished Nootka Sat evening, all day Sunday and Monday morning. Was not successful. 1 small (circa 6-7 lbs) chinook to show for the effort.

Sat - Camel Rock, Hoiss Pt., Cooptee
Sun - Cooptee, Burwood, Camel Rock. Caught the small one at Camel Rock Sunday evening.
Mon - Tried Esperanza - Rosa, Double Island, Garden Point and Saltery.

Saw a few nets out here and there, but nothing 'on fire' so to speak.
Fished primarily anchovy - 40-70' depth.
Concur with the prior post re: Camel Rock - no rhyme or reason to a pattern.

Hopefully others are having more success.

Monday morning - hoiss. Wow. 5 boats in the area. Caught (and released) 14 springs.
Kept two real clean ones. All fish were between 10-20lbs. No dirty ones today!
All on anchovies.

Fished Esperanza Inlet from August 2 to 7. Fishing was exceptional. Limited on Chinook, coho, halis, lings for 3 tags. Rosa Bay was great for us most days. One day it rained and the bite slowed a little but bottom fish made up for a slower day. it seemed like no matter where we went fish were around. Low rock had great coho action. Had one coho close to 10 pounds, hook nose forming. great to see after two slow years of no coho. Halis were caught close to shore 150 ft zone out to 250 ft. Fished the reefs and structure and found ling cod in most spots from Catela Island to Grassy.

Depths for Chinook 21 to 38 ft. Smallest anchovies, herring aid skinny g spoons and needle fish UV and glow hootchies. Even caught Chinook with short leaders on hootchies while trying for coho. Glow in the early mornings, Crome and UV once the sun came up. Paddle tail Jigs 16 Oz chartreuse for the lings. We even took two halibut while jigging for lings. What a surprise.

For the fish that were feeding, mini herring were packed in their bellies. Like the size of coho killer spoon.

Port Eliza service was wonderful. The food has greatly improved with the new cook.

Good luck out there. Till next year.

I think we are going to do one last run out to Nootka any reports on the fog. Was thick on the long weekend and coho showing? Mainly a bottom fish trip
