2021 Bamfield and Barkley Sound Reports

You kind of have it upside down, bank is hills and mountains on the ocean floor, shallow sand banks or rocky shelf, shallow spots in deeper water. IMO if you don’t know what a bank is you have no business going out there, don’t want to be rude but you are looking for trouble
thanks, ok, I see what the Bank is now (I thought completely opposite)

well I am new to this, but really want to learn and get more experience because I enjoy saltwater fishing

Great Thanks for all advises!
When you guys say "bank" - by this word you mean some deeper spots in the ocean relief?
Looking Google Maps ocean relief map I can see some deeper spot (like La Perouse) just few miles offshore Bamfield. Is this potential Hali spot where it likes to stay?

No fish is worth your life. Stay in the sound.

I've been 10 miles out in my 18'er. Weather got a little crappy and fog rolled in and it was a bit scary driving back. I probably wouldn't care if my wife wasn't on board. No radar so I was just following the GPS. It's not fun to know you have a long trip back in ****** weather. If the weather is nice, of course you can do it. There's a guy on here last year that went tuna fishing in a little Whaler. Or the guy that crosses the strait in a Costco inflatable. Just know when to turn back. You might not even get close to offshore before you turn back.

On a different topic. I was wondering if it is easy to buy anchovies in Bamfield ? Also.....what size of anchovie is working best.....regular size or larger size ?

I think I know the guy on inflatable

I was at McKay’s lodge in late June, excellent.lotsa small springs.lol I went boat instead of road…thank you anyone who says so.new question how’s fishing?
Was down the sound the last 3 days. Fished a few spots around Cree Austin, Sanford, diplock for springs. Everything we caught was small even tried great big spoons to try to stop those small fish from biting with no luck. We ended up stopping salmon fishing as we felt bad injuring so many little fish. Second day out we ran offshore and anchored up around 8miles. Caught two skate so we moved into the 5mile bank. Caught a beauty halibut 128cm then a tope shark I believe as it was too big to be a dog. Our last day we didn’t bother fishing and came home had a friend down that day tho and caught a couple decent fish at diplock. Looks like we should of gotten up to try! Should be getting really good any time now!

Great day fishing in Bamfield today. Found a pinnacle about 20 miles offshore and got 4 almost identical 80 to 85cm halibut. Almost no wind and no drift. Used mudraker jigs and a strip of salmon belly. All done in an hour.
Came back in and fished the wall and picked up a nice 18 pound Chinook. Fishing has been very slow for larger fish but tons of shakers to the point of very annoying. Very few boats out and weather is amazing F6FE28EF-BB73-47CE-AD7C-47FEF4711CF5.jpegC80C543D-6E56-4FCF-A00B-580498D2897B.jpegEF9DF41F-0A4F-4B99-AADA-B4ED2AED9C04.jpeg5EEEE356-74F8-4178-B28B-9A018E8D0DB4.jpeg

I’m not sure how you manage to fish with that top covering the dance floor but great report! Well done!

I'm pretty impressed on how clean your boat is :)

Went out to rats nose yesterday morning, Great run out, then it blew up, it was still fish able. We picked up 4 under size and 1 over size Hali. 3 wild coho , no hatchery coho to be found. We did get into some nice springs. Released 2 that were in the twenties , kept 4 springs, 2 which were in the high teens

Last day in Bamfield. Foggy this morning but cleared off.
Got a 15 pound Chinook and an 8 pound Coho today to end the trip. Has been tough salmon fishing to say the least but still an amazing trip. Did better on Hali and Ling than we normally do so that made up for the lack of bigger salmon.
Will head back to Vancouver tomorrow if winds are good. 190 mile trip down Juan de Fuca Strait and up Straight of Gerogia.
The JDF teaser head is my Billy Baroo if you know Caddshack. Have used it for a couple of years and has caught dozen of salmon. Almost no colour left and tons of teeth marks. Out fishes everything else I haveE3FEE489-B931-4E2F-B0B9-FA0206EAF681.jpegE2AAEB30-AE3C-493A-9992-74752C558479.jpeg7C8BD3B1-ED77-4461-8DC4-24DD019EDAA7.jpeg27EA315C-60A7-4B17-8084-F4039F30E036.jpegD42A7A15-A388-4D4A-BE8E-EFCEEFEB6727.jpeg566C7728-F973-4121-981D-0D3D976ACFE0.jpeg
