2021 Bamfield and Barkley Sound Reports

Cross posted in Bamfield accommodation recommendations.
Our group has been fishing Barkley for over 20 years with a lot of those years staying in Bamfield. Brad has rented us his cabin (next to Seabeam) before and for the last few years his bigger log house (also next to Seabeam). Our reservations this year are August 4th to the 11th. We're from Washington. The border will open up the 9th for those Americans that are fully vaccinated (that would include our group). Long and short, the late border opening and travel time to Bamfield isn't going to work with our three boats.
So, these dates should be available this year to some other group if your are late to book lodging. We can't (won't) cancel and leave Brad holding the bag, that just isn't going to happen. But, we would like to find someone or group who is interested in taking some of our time.
Call Brad directly or send a PM my way and I will get you in touch.

I wouldn’t try it.
I thing if the weather is 100% may try but its scary could you recommend any closer spot , wanted to get halibut for a long time but all good spots seem to be in big waters, so since can't get a bigger boat have to grow balls or find a closer spot

It has nothing to do with bigger balls, it’s big waters out there and weather can change quickly, on reallly nice day some guys do it but I would not. Pick your day and head out to 5-7-11 miles spots there is halibut to be a caught there without going all the way to rats nose. Back in days when I had smaller boat I did many charter trips to learn offshore conditions, after multiple trips with the pros I started venturing out there and a few times I wish I would not have gone lol. IMO not safe to venture out that far unless you are experienced boater with a bigger boat with Radar and ample power to go over potential 10ft swells. A few years back, an American crew out of renfrew wanted to fallow me out to swifsure in a bass boat type rig, there was a good 6 ft swell head on going out and they could barely keep up going 20mph into it, they ended up turning around a few miles out

I really appreciate your feedback.
Its a quick reliable boat with good electronics but I don't even think to try to attempt any swells bigger than max 3 ft with 10 sec gap , so no exceptions but perfect weather can work.
Any pointers around 3-11 miles gap?

Look at your charts, first bank is 5 miles out , then 7 then 11, it’s all in a line heading towards the rats nose, any bumps or contour ledge can get you into Hali, pick your days and work the areas it’s all part of the fun, I have pulled more Hali from those banks then big bank, closer in for me is the way I roll, why go 25 miles when you can get them at 5 miles, extra large herring and salmon belly drifted over humps and ledge always put meat in my boat

Great Thanks for all advises!
When you guys say "bank" - by this word you mean some deeper spots in the ocean relief?
Looking Google Maps ocean relief map I can see some deeper spot (like La Perouse) just few miles offshore Bamfield. Is this potential Hali spot where it likes to stay?

Wow!! LA PEROUSE BANK, it is 30mi offshore. Do you think it is bad idea to try on 16ft fiberglass boat to go there?
I would not do it in a 16 footer. I had a 16 foot whaler copy up until this season. We had lots of halibut from spots closer to shore. 5-8miles off is much safer than 30. This was my first trip in my new to me 190 Double Eagle… I’d only do it on close to perfect days.

Could you share some 16ft safe spots you had succes in ?

You kind of have it upside down, bank is hills and mountains on the ocean floor, shallow sand banks or rocky shelf, shallow spots in deeper water. IMO if you don’t know what a bank is you have no business going out there, don’t want to be rude but you are looking for trouble

If it was my first time again, I’d skip the jigging. Find a likely spot with the previously mentioned contours and drop offs, pick a contour line just off the bottom and drag a big plug around. Cover ground until you hook up and mark the spot on your gps. Then jig or drift bait or whatever turns your crank.
