HALIBUT CLOSURE

They will always overestimate the recreational take in order to be safe.
There is no incentive for them to favour us.

Well I would think it would be easier for us to change that then get more quota. Does that not fall in the SFAB wheelhouse.

Pretty difficult getting any government agency on side with a user group who simply wants more.
I agree the system is unfair, it's just really hard to get changes made.

Perhaps we need to raise money to have an independent assessment of recreational catches if they are indeed over estimating.

Or be advocate for a new system. Perhaps recreational fishermen should have to apply for hali tags.

Just throwing out ideas, it seems to me it’s not necessary about more quota but more about having access to the fishery year around for guides and lodges to capitalize on.

From the commercial side....Opening date of Halibut is March 24. Closing date of November 7.
Quota Reduction of 15%
7.1 million pounds for British Columbia
Info taken off a commercial forum.

Well i submit detailed log book reports that are compiled every 2 weeks. How about you?

As stated many times before the SFAB is not lobbing its a advisory process... anything done regarding allocation & lobbing is outside of the SFAB mandate........ when the timing is right we will go get what is deserved for the sport sector..............

I know we have been texting back and forth during this hectic, to say the least, iphc conference and I agree with quite a bit with you actually.

But what I bolded I find a bit confusing.

We are going to have the smallest rec TAC ever, so if now isn’t the right time then when will be? That’s a “we have nothing going on for that right now” type statement.

Correct me if I'm wrong but that represents a rec sector total of around 940,000 as the FCEY is less than 7.1 around 6.3 mill pounds

Using the 940,000 lb and the 2014 halibut model that would put us into the lowest amount on that model for a full season.

1-day/2-pos, 6-annual, first fish 112cm (40lb) second fish 112cm (40lb) with an overage of 22,939 lbs
or....
1-day/1-pos, 6-annual, any size with an overage of 18,781 lbs

I have not updated my model since 2014 so unless things have changed that is looking doable. When the dfo model comes out I'll check to see if mine is still valid. Do not take this as being 100% accurate as it's been awhile since I created this and things may have changed. That said at least we can see what it's looking like this year and prepare for the upcoming season.

Added.....
Derby pointed out that this model does not include iRec or Morts that the new model has.
So that will have to be taken into account.

For everybody on my boat

Im sure you realize that if all 300,000 sports fishermen were to submit log books every two weeks like the businesses do, it would overwhelm DFO. But there is no reason with today's technology why Rec fishermen can't provide a catch total. Be it a running total or an end of year total. Perhaps a quarterly report could be required online, but at least a requirement for an annual report is doable. Hell as I've said on numerous occasions, require fishers to report all salmon and halibut entered on their licenses prior to receiving a new one. Will people lie? Probably a few will, but no more than are doing now and likely the same handful of clowns!

I think we are going to have to do something along the lines you suggested.

Without proper data they are just guessing. We may be catching more than they think...just saying that's a possibility

Don’t they already have that incorporated into the app?

If you’re talking about the FishingBC app then I’m all for everybody to get on board.
I don’t post my catches there because of the log books. The creel census girls also note that my catch is logged so there isn’t double posting of my catches. They more focus on the rec fishers in Tofino

There are wiser and better people looking at this then myself whom I trust... the day I get the tug on my shirt sleeve & they say Its Go Time.... then we can roll out the barrel of monkeys ... :)
Just to let you know there is some stuff in play and being explored to retain more quota for the rec sector...just because its not on the forum or in the public to see doesn't mean there aren't doors being open or knocked on..we did notice what happen last fall...... thing just don't happen over night....remember in dealing with government most times slow and steady wins the race :)

Thanks to all the folks putting in their valuable time on this issue.....tell us what we need to do and when we we need to do it and the campaign (however that looks) will begin and I think following this thread there will be a healthy appetite to see some change.

Keep up the good work folks.

With thanks,
Darin

Firm believer need to do something like Vic harbour blockade etc. Only way things get done these days and I’d be there 100%

Civil protests that get some media attention are the only way we will see any change or even get the minister to sit down and take us seriously

I also would have my boat in a blockade if that was decided the way ahead was.......and I personally am friends with a few dozen fisher people who feel the same
