2016 Port Renfrew Reports

I was up there all last week and it was getting better. The guides were working Waburn the last 2 days. East Point was showing fish in the early morning. I saw 15 caught in the 1st 2 hours of light. Most looked small however. We managed a 24 and 13 on Friday.

We fished yesterday 6-2. Started at camper and was quite a few shakers, lost one decent one and watched it jump a few times after shaking the hook. Action slowed after that and we trolled north with not much action. Finally got a decent hit that was lost due to a broken hook, put new hook on and 2 mins later had another good hit and got a 23lber. That was mid morning. Not much action after that.

Hey guys, just wondering if anyone has the link so I can check the swell size and interval. Thinking of heading out to the bank on Wednesday. Thanks !

Back from a weekend in Renfrew... Saturday and Sunday were pretty slow for us along the beach. Some guys did catch fish but lots of other guys didnt. Wouldnt say its on fire, but its improving - slowly. Bonked a few good ones out at the bank this morning, all 12-16#, so nothing special.

Windyty.com is a great site for wind and swell info. Its been very reliable for me, easy to use, has an app, etc. App is a bit clunky but just takes some getting used to.

Thanks for the report! Thinking about running out to the bank tomorrow. According to windyty.com it looks half decent tomorrow morning and early afternoon. Says 0.6m and 7 second spacing. Going to be in a 17.5ft tyee with a 115hp. Any advice on those conditions for that size boat?

Thanks Guys

Windyty says 0.9m @ 16s for Tuesday morning, and 1.1m @ 8s in the afternoon. If you can get out before the afternoon swells, it wont be too painful for you guys. A radar reflector and a VHF on channel 6/16 will make things a lot safer.

Nice to hear you found some fish. We got skunked on a Saturday fishing inshore. We tried to run to the bank but it was just to rough for our boat. We saw u fishing at Walbran. It's been a tough year for us. Hopefully the weather will cooperate for Wednesday and we will make it out to the bank.

Ran into one of the forum guys at ramp a day ago who was pulling his boat out after returning from running back from Renfrew. He recognized me from my trips up there and knew my forum handle, and we got to chatting. He posts on the forum sometimes. and I recognized his boat name right away. I haven't seen a post up about his trip from him since he returned. So, I thought I'd pass along what he told me. He has a much bigger boat than mine capable of making it out to the bank most days. Even though his boat is very seaworthy it sounded like he and the guys he was with had a tough time getting into fish there. He said the Salmon fishing was really slow, and even the Halibut fishing wasn't that good either. He has been going to Renfrew a long time, so he's pretty experienced fishing the area. I was a little dissapointed talking to him, as I was hoping he'd have an encouraging report from the area. I was thinking of heading up that way this month, but after talking to him I'm not so sure now. Hope things improve over there.

Not a first hand report on my part, but from a reliable, capable, experienced source. Thanks to the guys posting reports from Renfrew, keeping us up to date on what's happening. Hope things improve soon.

Heading up for ten days maybe one of the ten will produce, better then work. Always manage a few stinkys but salmon suck, i have 3 to my name this year all about 5 lbsDid tag acfew good one last time but never got them in the net

TheBigGuy: was he fishing at the bank, or were you just saying his boat is capable of fishing there? When I was out at the bank last weekend we had 4 fish in the cooler in less than 3 hours, and probably released a dozen more shakers and charter specials.

Anyways Im heading up this evening so Ill have some sort of report for you guys after the weekend, hopefully a good one!

He was fishing the beach and the bank with not a lot of success from what he was saying. There were three guys aboard and he said they brought back 3 hali with the largest Hali being 21 pounds. I would be pretty dissapointed fishing the bank if the largest Hali I caught was 21 lbs. I'm used to getting good size Hali over there, and that doesn't sound anywhere near good Hali fishing. From what I recall him saying they did get into Salmon, but not a lot, and no good sized Salmon. He sounded a little dissapointed to say the least. He stays at PRM pretty regularly, so he's no first timer to the area. Maybe he will see this post and give more details as to his trip.

Pretty common size hali if he was fishing the Chicken Ranch. They don't call it the Buffalo Ranch ; )

Ya I know, that's what to expect if fishing the ranch. I fish the NE corner of the boundary when I'm up there and rarely find ones that small on that end of the bank. If your looking for your one under I can see going to the chicken ranch, but if your looking for a good size keeper to take home that doesn't seem to make much sense. I didn't ask him where on the bank he was fishing.

Killed 6 springs at the bank on Tuesday. 10-17lbs. When I halibut fish I want ones that are 15-30lbs! 21lbs is a perfect size if you ask me.

He seemed a little disappointed with the catch. So, I really can't speak for him. I was assuming he was looking for something bigger and didn't have any luck getting what he was after. Yes that is a great eating size halibut, but it doesn't exactly go to far if that is your only Hali trip on the year. I can't speak for him. So maybe he will pipe in. Maybe he didn't feel like posting up the results of a disappointing trip for fear of getting jumped all over. I'll leave this one alone for now, if he feels like posting hopefully he'll give more details.

When you folks troll the western edge for salmon do you get many of your hali's at the same time or does everyone anchor up for those?
