2015 Nootka Sound/Esperanza Inlet Reports

You have to learn to take what some guides or lodges say with a grain of salt. Remember they have a business to promote, what do you want them to say,, it sucks don't come out. They wouldn't last very long would they. On the other hand most of the guides on this site are pretty straight forward about what is happening. I for one like their reports as usually they are a true report of what is happening out there and what can be obtained if you get it right.

Well i don't really know about other areas but most of the guides i know are already pre booked like i am and there is no reason to exaggerate or embellish a fishing report. The guests are already coming to fish anyways.

4 days until Tuta campground for some fishing. Cant wait. will be my first time up there. Sooooo Excited....

Like all areas, some people are tuned in to get the fish. Right speed, right depth, right leader length, right bait, spoon or whatever. We saw guys nailing fish after fish when we could not buy a bite. Another boat came bottom fishing with us and they did poor and we hammered them. Not sure what the difference was even told them what we were doing, big chunk of salmon belly on a jig, place a couple feet off bottom, shove the rod in the holder and wait! They got a small ling and a rock cod., we limited. So when I hear guides are nailing fish it is true, they get dialled in and get fish, saw twitch my own eyes over the last few days at Nootka. Saw a well know guide on here fishing by himself, probably had some free time and went to get dialled in, experiment and it will eventually come together.

Have family up there right now where leaving Wednesday. Fished sat and sun, got there 8 no problem . Fishing was said to be fair to good.

If heading into Tuta, say hi to Larry & Shirley from Drew and Dave. Just make sure you have 4 x 4 and the trailer has very good tires and spares, if you have never been over the ridge from Cougar Creek. Large shattered rock road, hard on tires, easy to spin out on, and it is a turn to boot.

Understand that Larry & Shirley are elderly and doing the best they can with what they have got. Showers may not be in the best shape, older freezers, docks are getting beat up, etc.

Been a couple of years now since our last stay at Tuta. Advantage is you are as close as you can get to the outside.

Can anyone please let me know the condition of the road into Cougar Creek/Tuta Marina ??
Thanks

From Gold River to the drop down to Nesook the gravel is excellent. The west side hill up and down from the summit to Nesook is awful washboard. From Nesook to Tuta is reasonable for a seldom graded road. I can't afford to buy another camper and/or boat so I took 2 full hours to drive from Tuta to Gold river. I'm sure others could and would do it much faster.
These opinions of the road are based on 40 years of driving logging roads and may not agree with those that haven't. Twogone

Back from Nootka and Critter Cove last week fishing the 18th through Wednesday 22nd. Fishing was pretty good for us. Perplexed by the slow reports. Fish were smaller than years past but plentiful. Had at least two fish at the boat every morning before 6:30AM fishing Hoiss and close proximity. Released a lot of smaller 10-16# and had numerous other hookups. Could have limited out by Monday but we did a lot of catch and release looking for fish in the 20s. Ended up with only one at 22# and the other 11 in the 14-19# range. Tomic Cop Car and 727 in 5" and 6" where the ticket for us. Ran them with a false flasher on the ball at 40-50 feet. Came home with a 34 and 41# halibut for icing on the cake. Great trip.

So looking at mapquest for Tuta marina and campground, typed in 490 Eagle Cres, Gold River and its not near the water. Am I missing something. It is right in the middle of the town.

Yes you are missing something-I believe that is their mailing address-certainly not where the marina is. If you know Nootka it's about 2 to 300 yards from Camel rock in the direction of Gore Island.- or if looking at the San carlos light from camel ,Tuta is to the left along the camel rock shore. Can't remember the name of the channel.

I did the same thing today. With the same results. Looking on the web I found one thread that said its about 8-10 k past cougar creek. So that's what I'm going with. No boat for us this trip just going to check out the area, and see if I really want to drag my boat up there. Good luck to all who are fishing.

How to you drive there from taking the 28 hwy (think thats the hwy).

Me too...perplexed...was there roughly the same dates. Limits for all boats we knew at Critter; which was 5 or 6. A 602 coloured hoochie was the ticket for us 35 to 42. Though I must say for the first time in a few years Hoiss was a complete waste of time for us.

When you see boats spread all over the sound, it's usually a sure bet people are prospecting for fish. Hell I even saw people looking for fish in the Spanish Pilot group. Never seen that before, and I've been fishing Nootka for over 25 years now. On my trip, I landed fish up Tahsis inlet, 1 outside at the light ( just legal 77 on the nose) burdwood ( 2 over there) beer can bay ( lost a dinger broke at the knot) every time I passed a boat they would look over with the classic arms outstretched sign as if to say, "Anything?" I'm telling you it was slow. But like I said, thanks to the rain, I'm sure the fish getting a fresh scent of their natal stream must have moved some fish in, because it started to pick up just as I was leaving.

I was there from wed thru Friday last and it had slowed down considerably from say earlier in the week. We got our limit but as I said in my report it wasn't about where fish were it was where they weren't!!! Guys get perplexed because they plan to hit a certain place for first bite-bite doesn't materialize for them and they aren't prepared to change tactics or move. They make bad choices of where to go for first bite- I like to fish it the night before-if I get nothing and see nothing I may rethink going there in the morning.I personally do not believe there are as many fish in the sound as usual this year-this may have changed since I left on Friday as it rained heavily thurs night and when I left fri. Bajo was a desert for salmon on thurs-perhaps because of a large brown bloom in the water-same as last year, nothing at the monument or Friendly cove-loaded 3 days before. You had the right numbers as far as last week-I was getting all our fish at 38ft with a dummy running at 46. I like your choice of hootchy-I run bait myself but a 602 hootchy is one of my nootka go to hootchy colours. To explain for those who are wondering a 602 is basically an ivory white hootchy with the Tomic 602 colour bands through it-maybe wrong but I think Yamashita has it-SeaFever will know. You have a lot of boats in Nootka-not everyone is prepared-not everyone is as dialed in as you seem to be or has fished there as long as me so of course guys will be perplexed. I like to give them a bit of a hand if I'm able and hopefully they will not be as perplexed next year. Congratulations on a good trip-let's hope we both stay out of the perplexed column and I'll find out again on thurs. Hopfully this great fishery will continue and guys will enjoy the beauty of Nootka-and by and by get out of the "perplexed column!! LOL
