2015 Nootka Sound/Esperanza Inlet Reports

I would be interested in knowing where the "T's" are? thanks. Rodger

Here is a portion of codfathers post from page 20 or so. A lot of good info from him as to where everything is located.

I have never fished this area but look forward to doing so in the future.

" The T is a bit NW towards Kyuquot about 5 miles from the pins at Esperenza. Sometimes when I'm looking for big fish I will troll from the pins around the corner to the T or Whales Tail. That takes a couple of hours trolling at 3 MPH."

I'm planning to head up to the Cougar Creek area for a few days on July 20th with my son and a couple of his young friends. I'm pretty new to all this and have never taken my little boat (16' Harborcraft) to the west coast before. Any advice or tips from fellow forum members would be greatly appreciated. I know the road can be rough so I have planned for a slow trip. I'm told it is possible to limit out (2 per day?) on springs so is there and good ground fishing out there with out going 'outside'? Should I take my prawn & crab traps or leave them at home? Looking forward to some friendly help. Thanks Twogone, Ladysmith

By the 20th you can do well fishing inside. Camel rock, hoise point, straight across from cougar creek and all over... We were there last week and there were fish inside.

Leave your traps at home.....they'll be in the way and crabbing and prawing is far from stellar this year even for the locals

I noticed they changed the coho retention to four coho per day, no need to check for clipped, at least along the coast, and inside waters.image.jpg

Edit: while colored map seems to show four coho clipped or not per day, there is additional retention info in the sub area. Be careful

Effective 00:01 hours June 1 until 23:59 hours August 31, 2015, you may retain
two (2) coho per day (hatchery marked only)

For Petes Sake. Looks like you're right. I was going to delete my previous post, but then I decided to leave it up as an example of how screwed up this avenue of communication is. You'll note that this map modification was made yesterday. What does a guy go with, the map or the fisheries notice? One would have to think it would be pretty hard to prove malice in the court of law, with that color coded map being the first thing most gravitate towards.

Fellow fishers: THANK YOU ALL for the great advice!!! Leaving the traps at home will be great as it's only a small boat and the 'ol Kodiak camper has damn little storage space; thanks for the tip.
I had the motors serviced yesterday, scrubbed the boat and hope to do a test run off Ladysmith today (weather permitting). Reservations are made at the campground and the 'boys' are itching to go.
May I assume an assortment of spoons, some anchovies and a few herring will do the trick? Without reveling your favorite 'cod hole', may I beg for the name (or co-ordinates) of a few spots a fellow may have some luck getting some 'white fish' (my wife is not fond of salmon)? Thanks again for all you help....VERY MUCH appreciated. newbee Twogone

Just got back last night from Nootka fished July 2-11. First 4 days fished Beano with lots of fish from 14# to 25#. There were lots of boats between the Lighthouse and Wash for a few days with good results. Wind blew up from the South for 2 days that made it tough fishing outside. Fished Camel Rk on the 7th and caught 4 springs. It's still spotty inside but the rain and low pressure will move some fish around.

Fished Escalante's July 8-10 with lots of fish caught. Biggest was 25# for us but most under 20#.

The wind was as flat as the Ocean July 8th that made bottom fishing as good as it gets. It's amazing how productive it can be when your jig is drifting along at .5mph with a 10 degree angle.

Heading back to Nootka July 15 until September if anyone needs anything? And yes I do have my knives this time.

I'll attach pics from my iPhone as it's way easier.

Good luck fishing.

Ya most people only look at the colored map. Pretty evident when you go to the local marina cleaning table and everyone laughing at how well they did around the corner from friendly cove. Limits of Coho they all cheering as the fillet and bag there catch.

Codfather - thanks for the update. Will you be at Critter on the 18th, if so will see you there. Two other questions, when traveling to the "T", do you go on the outside or up the inside and put Esperanza? And do you use and scent when pulling spoons/tomics?

Dayne

SeaSport, I travel the inside. I leave Critter first light and enjoy the morning coffee as it's flat the whole trip. Sea otters and bears are seen most days.

It takes 1.5 hrs to get to the mouth at 25mph and is 40 miles.

No I don't use scent on any lures.

I'm fishing out of Newton Cove July 16 & 17 then back to Critter the 18th. See you then.

Mike

I'll be up at critter from 16-19th. If the pins are fishing good wouldn't mind making a trip out there with another boat , as I have never been there either. I'll be in a grady named rox-ley.

Fished Esperanza the last couple days. Fishing had really picked up with lots of fish in the high teens to low thirties. Got a couple bonus halibut trolling the salmon gear. Fished Ferrer mostly but caught half our fish closer in. First day the fish wanted hootchies and the second day they wanted anchovies.

just want to say all you people who are fishing the light house, wash rock and maquinna pnt, and i see netting slabs you need to read the regs! 77cm and under not over!
catch and release!
