Sooke 2013 Fishing Reports

Out yesterday and twice today and still lots of Coho out there. I never fished for springs but one boat at our dock had 2 teenagers this afternoon. I would say slightly more activity in the afternoon than the mornings right now.t

Good day out front of Sooke harbour today for coho. Finally found some keepers after several trips of throwing back countless wilds. Kept 3 clipped to 9lbs and 3 pinks, but let go about a dozen wilds. Bites seemed to come in flurries with several double headers then an hour of nothing. Lots of bites with riggers at 20-25'

Found about a 6 pound hatch in a 3 hour trip out around Bedford's in 350 ft and 55 on rigger with a purple coho killer. Hootch and spoons did notta - Switched to bait and had 3 hits in last 30 minutes missed 2 and released a good wild one. Nice water no boats!

Went out this morning started off of secretary and got pushed west slowly. Got into lots of coho and one 3 to 4 lb spring(released). Coho were nice and big but unfortunately none were marked. Came back with nothing in the cooler but lots of action. Next time out will be after Oct 1. Got a little ugly for the 14 ft tinner around 10:30 so we headed in.

Today we finally got into some decent sized hatch Coho ; 4 Coho - 11lbs ; 400 - 550' Head - Secretary ; green spoons/plastics 60 - 90'
Couple of nice hooknose in the mix :)
go get em!

Today they were in closer 200-400 ft.. 12 to the boat and a couple of hatch in the box.. Nothing big today 6-10# but all scrappy. 2 on the Bucktail fly rod combo.

X 2 what skins said still lots of fish out there just have to go thru so many wild to find a hatchery

Same-same for us--lots of wild but only 2 keepers. The biggest fish for us were down at 175 feet on the rigger. I did notice on the female hatch that I cleaned that her eggs were nowhere near ripe. That's promising that some of these fish are going to be around for awhile... The badboy 5 inch spoon with a pink skirt outfished everything else we tried today by about 3 to 1.

Nice foggy day out there top of secretary 400+ ft, landed 4 nice hatch 8-9 pounder's, and released 3 beauty wilds that will live well for another day! Noticed the same thing on our two females... eggs were quite small. glass out there. good times.

had a good day out there as well. found fish all over and though the water column... the fishing was not hot, but consistent. First fish to the boat was a hatchery.. worked hard the rest of the day sorting through the wilds. Released a nice one round 12 lbs.thought is was a spring when it hit, as we were pretty close to secretary. managed a nice 16 lb chum as well as a bonus... oh yeah.. one pink too. all fish on bait.

brought out my two good quality spinning combos and rigged up teaser heads with anchovys. ran one out the back, one stacked on the rigger... what a blast! a good number of fish hit the surface line... despite being very few jumping. twice as much fun fighting the fish on light gear with no flasher.

Took my bro from Calgary fishing yesterday. 8-12.Started out at Beechey, 400ft+ trolled with the ebb all the way to the bluffs. Released a dozen wilds, another half doz strike and spit the hook. Managed one beauty hatchery 9+lbs. He had a blast! Lots of reeling practice! I can hardly wait for Oct 1st!! Xena

Had a lot more hook-ups today, but only 1 hatch. 200ft-400 ft of water.. Same size 6-10# but they pull hard. 2 more on the Bucktail fly rod combo.. Pink was the colour today, thats 10 fish on the Bucktail for me this year and the most in years..

Three hatch for us, deep water off secretary. Lots of big wilds let go. Pretty mixed bag of weather but enjoyable day.

Fished Saturday for ho's. Hit about 25, only 3 hatch landed and 1 hatch lost that was identified before losing. Could have been more but you lose a few side of boat trying to ID.
All but 1 released swam away unharmed (in my opinion). The one that did not look so good was caught on the only tandem hook set up that I was fishing.
Only was fishing it because I was given a lure to try and that is how it was set up. I have since changed it to a larger single.
A good reminder to use a single hook on your gear not the tandem hootchie set ups.

The lure I tried was a Royal Flush. Ran off the back rod right on the surface. It looks like a saltwater fly with a plug type head on it. Great action in the water and no flasher required. Fish loved it and were hammering it. Would be a good one to try off the fly rod. Check it out.

Hello everyone. Just bought my first boat and will be joining you out there. I have fished in the salt a number of times before but hope to do much more now. I hope to keep out of everyones way till I get better but if I mess up please remember when you were first learning. Heading out tomorrow for the second time. last week I went out and released everything I caught. Looking for positive karma for the boat. Had a good day released lots. I will be monitoring the radio and will answer to Papajames. (White Arima with funny looking guy sporting a confused look on his face driving).
