Sooke Reports - Spring and Summer 2012

thanks again for the vist lippy was fun now we need fishfly to anty up and have a pop with him .....

wolf

The guy is 4 foot nothing... One pop and one of us would be driving him home :D

On a side note... If you launch at the Prestige, Jock's, or the Harbour....When you have a green and red buoy on the sides, then power up.

It is not cool to get outside of the docks then give 'er.

Tigerprawn.... Shoot me a pm (give me a day or two notice) so we can have a wobbly and shoot some water balloons at the bass terds that are pounding your boat against the dock..

Sincerely,

Lippy.. Paid up

Christmas is coming....any recommendations of a fishfinder/gps for under $600?

Lowrance Elite 5 Gold came with a decent chart and a rebate. Smallish but after rebate was well under $600. Harbour Chandler at Vancouver boat show.

Thanks, I'll look at that.
I bought this unit this year, great deal for powerful depth sounder, and gps combo, plus it comes with navionics gold card for all of canada plus inland lakes, i would definetly recomend it!, back to fishing reports though, was out yesturday from 9 - 1pm @ otter point, 1 hatchery coho and tons of wild, my buddy snapped off a decent spring, first time fishing with knuckle busters so i didnt grind him too hard, was a tough pill to swallow though as that was the only spring on the line all morning....

A busy morning on the water, the Coho bite was on for much of the morning. Of the several we got to the boat, we managed 4 hatch. It was quite remarkable to look around and see so many boats seeing action at one time!

Nice to meet you yesterday Adler. Congrats on all the fish! Was crazy today. Had tripples and doubles a few times. Got my 4 hatchery coho and let a nice chubby 12 pound spring swim away for another day. Coho at all depths spring was at 117ft on the rigger.

Out tomorrow wolfie?? You on for another .25?

One day I'll get a quarter back..

was out fishing from Pedder last wednesday. depth-sounder and GPS were out... so decided to fish out of the bay. was out on the water by 7... fished till noon, had one bite. anybody else had any success from pedder? or next time should i make the run to church?

Headed out for a solo fish this afternoon. Dropped in the gear at Otter and when I was still lowering the gear on the second rod, it popped. Feisty wild ho. 5 minutes later another wild. Next was a hatchery....bonked! I moved in tight to Otter looking for some springs. Lots of bait around but no springs. Moved over to Possession and right away had a screamer that got off. Probably a coho, but will never know. Then found another school of coho's and bonked my second hatchery. Called it after that. Good practice with the gaff release today. Fished some glow and some uv......coho killer, anchovy, coyote. From 45'-95' on the riggers.
Had fun breaking in a new to me reel. Rapala North Coast mooching reel. Picked it up off a forum member for a great price and I love it! Sooooo smooth.

Off to Renny tomorrow for the week. Hope fishing is good. Hope you all have fun with the coho. I will give you a report when I am back.

Fished Possession today from 9 to 5, The action was ALL coho. hooked up 25+ times and took home our limit of clipped fish. the two depths that were producing fish today were 100 and 70, fished hootchies all day ( tiger prawn and glow white ) . a GREAT day on the water.

cheers
Rich

Got out around noon in time to catch the Coho bite and fished from Secretary to just past the Bluffs. Had to search through a ratio of 8 to 1 unclipped vrs clipped coho (I can’t bring myself to call them Wild or Hatch as many are unclipped Hatchery Coho). Perhaps we were just unlucky. None of the Coho saw the net, if unclipped they were released beside the boat and if clipped we just lifted them in over the side as they were six pounds or less. Some of the unclipped Coho we caught were a little worse for wear. One had scale loss likely from being previously netted and one had a healed over missing eye.

It is really impressive what a huge number of Coho there is out there, everyone was catching them around us and they were all over the sounder in large numbers. I have seen nothing like this for Coho in a long time at Sooke.

Chinook on the other hand were hard to track down and we did not see any caught. We fished in close at the usual depths for the first few hours with no results. With a lot of searching we did manage to get an 18 lber at 110 feet on a green glow anchovy RD teaser head with a Chartreuse (light green) glow and silver flasher.

Fished off the trap sunday also with coyote spoons . Lots of coho and good ratios of clipped vs unclipped approx 1/3 . Kept 4 clipped for three guys which was enough due to amount of unclipped being released. then tucked in close for a small spring on bait. Nice to see the coho in numbers and with bellies stuffed with needlefish. Small single hooks work best for not poking eyes out, thanks for the report of one caught with a healed eye, good to know they can survive that. Was an awesome day out with buddies.

beautty day on the water yesturday, was out at Otter Point from 10AM - 3PM, right off the bat we started with a double header than fished 3 hrs of non-stop coho action, managed to get a few small springs but only kept an 11lber for the BBQ, Was fun playing the fish and using the gaf to release them, released a few rough looking fish that have definetly been netted and had lotsa scales removed. Most action for us was anywhere from 30-60 feet, sometimes we would get popped off the rigger on the way day, also made a couple hookups while on the surface trying to hookup to the downrigger clip...Went out last night with my wife, unfortunetly the bite was not on for us, saw 1 fish netted, marked lots of schools but not a bite. Anyone had any luck in the evenings? maybe they were all gorged from the frenzy in the afternoon...

I took home 4 yesterday and id say smallest was 8 and biggest was 9 so nice size for this time of year id say. We let alot of smaller ones go though.

I hit many fish, mostly Coho, out of those we only kept 3, 1 spring, 2 hatchery Coho - 8lbs. No need to fill the bag limit, just take what is needed.
Poppa no need to waste gas, fish can be found downtown ;)

Well this is my first report. Went out with a buddy for the first time ever today. Got a lot of good advice from people. Managed 1 wild coho which was released and one rockfish. Had 2 great bites that resulted in half chovies.

I have 2 questions. First, when the tide is against us I noticed we weren't going anywhere. We sped up to make progress but it also increased the rigger angle. Is this something you just deal with?

Also, a very strange thing happened. My buddies line totally wrapped itself around mine. Like, GOOD and tight. We managed to figure it out but couldn't understand why. I know the rigger booms aren't very long and the boat isn't wide so that could have something to do with it? Any input appreciated! I am going to give her another shot soon.

Fish was caught on glo teaser / green-gold flasher at 110 of 180 ft whirl bay. Not that it matters though... seems like they are taking everything.

Pretty slow today for us, one small spring not quite a teener and one good pin popper that was missed both of those on hootchies. A beauty of a sock on bait and a bunch off yo yos smashing our bait but none of them stuck. Saw one guy manage a couple nice ones right in tight at O'brien. Should have gone west I think.
