Gulf Islands 2012

McDonald park on sea island just north of the airport is the closest launch to fish from porlier to entrance island. Steveston is closer to south galiano and active pass.

Galciertim, looks like you were a day late as I was out the day before you on the east side of Galiano for about 3 hrs and hooked into 8 fish in that time, keeping 3. I also fished on yesterday (Friday) and it was much slower. I only fished for about 2.5 hrs but didn't get a sniff in the exact same location/time I was fishing the day before. However, right when I was about to head in I decided on one quick troll in deeper water and within 10 mins I had a nice 12 lb spring on and managed to bring it in and net it safely despite being solo that day with 3 lines in the water. Always makes things exciting when fishing alone if you've got more than 2 lines down.

On general I would say the thrasher area is much more consistent than the wleast side of Galiano but during may/June very good days can be had around Galiano. Thrasher seems to hold more and bigger fish in my experience.
 
Thanks for the update TinCan. I hate being a day late! I will give it another go when the weather turns again. The question is...head to Galiano or Thrasher? Always a crap shoot. And maybe now that we are nearing the end of June the fish will be moving to the West Van shoreline...
 
Fished Porlier for a couple hours on sunday and picked up a 19#'r on a splatterback hoochie @ 125'. Didn't mark any bait at all. Gonna try for the evening bite tonight.
 
Gorgeous out there tonight, fished from 6:30 to 8. Not much again bait wise but we did manage to boat a nice red 22#'r. Splatterback @ 140' in 145' FOW. Hoping to get the interior of the boat painted tomorrow so we can play this weekend. Pic is of the 19#'r from sunday.

very nice looking fish underdog! Any other boats out there with you these last few days? I'm gonna try to get out to porlier or cable bay later this week (thurs or fri)

Thanks tincan. Couple boats out there each time I've been out, we all seemed to be pretty spread out depth wise. I'm going to try to get out again tonight weather permitting. Glaciertim, its just a glow splatterback hoochie, 42" leader from the end of the flasher to the tip of the hoochie, 40 lb. leader and a UV green glow flasher. I have to say that set-up has been my most consitent rig for a few years now, ECVI and WCVI. I don't know if it makes any difference at all but I DON'T run my leader through the tip of the hoochies as suggested. I pierce a tiny hole between the eyes of the hoochie and run my leader through it to give it a little "off-centered" wobble.
 
Got out for the evening slack last night and couldn't have asked for better conditions. Down 10 minutes and hooked into what felt like a good size (15-20?) fish which I broke off, not paying attention. 10 minutes later into another one, managed to get this one up to the boat only to have it wrap itself around the other rigger! Looked about 15 lbs. 0 for 2 last night.... I guess you can't win them all. Back at it tonight...
 
Over at Galiano this weekend. Heading out this afternoon for a fish. Anybody been fishing around Galiano lately? Power lines area in particular?
 
Gonna head out tomorrow afternoon for a couple hrs on the flood tide at the power lines off the east side of Galiano. anyone been catching anything there lately?
 
A few bigger fish in the mix now. Brought in a 26# and a 13# red on friday. Another boat picked up a 20# too. Others have had a harder time finding them and I had 2-3hr skunk trips before finding them again on friday.
 
Fished Saturday from 1 till 5 2 fish on, only managed 1 in the boat. Nice 16# red. Splatterback hootchy. Hopefully out again on Friday
 
fished the east side of galiano near the power lines this past weekend and didn't get anything. Missed one spring hit and pulled up a few dogfish and a ling. spend about 3 hours out there using chovies/hootchies. Seems things have slowed up considerably
 
Any body dragging lines through the gulf islands lately??? Colinson point or cable area?? Pender bluffs??
 
well after a slow 2 weeks waiting for the wave of summer run chinooks to start running through the Galiano area we had a pretty great day today on the water. fished for 5hrs this morning from 6-11 with only 1 bite that yielded a beauty 27# white ended up going back out at around 4 pm and had an unreal epic battle with a 33# red in the middle of a 360 degree lightning storm with hail and a sunset all at the same time. This Tyee put up an unbelievable fight we were very lucky to land it. It was a long torpedo measuring 40.5 inches with a 25 inch waist. Fish went around the other rigger cable but with a quick rod manouver between the boat and cable and a serious tug o war to get it coming to the side of the boat and a few dashes under the boat and almost catching the line around the leg he finally turned his head over and with one swift long reach of the net we got him. fish was down 88ft in over 300ft of water. at least a 30 min battle for the smoked salmon.
