Hey Lorne,
I was out this morning too. Same time as you.
I was in the little white boat with the big waves coming over the bow. Maiden voyage today. Not a good time this morning, that's for sure. Fished for one long run over the hump and called it quits. Four waves over the bow in an open bow boat was enough for us. Headed up the side of Quadra to bottom fish some of the bays out of the wind. One good sized rock fish and a gazillion doggies for our troubles. Fished the hump again later in the afternoon around 1:30-2:30. much better weather conditions until the wind came up again and the tide Got my balls twisted in a knot. Sigh, Oh well, caught a couple more doggies, one at almost 4.5 feet that decided my rigger and prop were there to make loop-d-loops around. Still, nothing beats a day on the water.
Saw something kind of cool during our bottom fishing though. We could see fish feeding on the surface and as we got closer realized they were dog fish. As we got nearer we could see that the water was red all around them. Figured maybe they'd found the carcass of something and were eating it but it turned out to be clouds of crill. There were dozens of these huge red swarms everywhere and the dogfish were gorging themselves on it. All of a sudden we are surrounded by hundreds of four inch dorsal fins zooming around on the surface. It was insane to watch them and just how many there were.
So No Salmon love for me today. Headed out again tomorrow barring weather conditions. We'll see what the day brings.
