Jigging or Drift Fishing for Salmon

Ok. What is hot stamp foil?
I didn't know a dam thing about it until I ordered what I thought was some really flashy holographic sticker paper for jigs. Rec'd it-amazing stuff until I tried to use it. No backing-no glue. First bad buy from China and I had 15 meters of the stuff. Better do some reading-it was hot stamped foil-goes on with heat-so rather a long winded explanation but you heat up a silicon padto 180c lay the foil down lure on top-press hard and voila -the shiny fish scale is transferred onto the jig--so where am I-I have the foil, -built a press --bought an iron for 5 bucks and the silicon pad should be here next week-played with it enough to realise it is way better than paint--check out this very short vid

I will be really interested to see what you think of it once it is applied, and of course your experience with how the fish react to it.

I used to be very motivated to do as much as possible for myself, since a kid always tied my flies, but I used to build (not the neatest) rods, build little boats for freshwater, build my own camper ... now I barely stay on top of flies for my trout fishing, and this summer I actually bought some :(
Still I am interested

It is a progression-Used to do fly tying and lure making as a kid-mainly because where I grew up there was little available except what you ordered from Herters. Got hooked on hi tech jigging-started tying assist hooks because replacements are expensive and difficult to find. Then started touching up jigs with paint and adding decals -then discovered foil stamping. I have managed a little bit using silicon oven mitts and cloth to see a little bit of what it could be-so of course I went all in. I am retired-not in Mexico for the first time in 20 years so I am single handedly boosting the Chinese fishing parts economy-keeps me busy until I can get the boat out. Will show the finished product once my silicon heat pad arrives.

The Jigs on Aliexpress are no longer cheap-pretty sad -used to love looking for bargains but sadly the real thing is the same price here. The tackle store at Pacific plaground in Black Creek has the best selection and prices in this neck of the woods
Agree AliExpress jigs got pricey. But I picked up a couple last night 160g. Add hooks and they at $10 shipped. Pretty good.
Really like this rod with Fuji components that I got 15 months ago (after @spring fever got one) as local Shimano gear was impossible to get…

I also picked up a travel slow jigging rod with Fuji components. Put a Daiwa BG on it.

Do you have a review for us on that reel?
I would like to give you a review but an actual working review won't happen until march. Just putting line on it , playing with the lever drag and overall impression is extremally favourable. Finish is excellent and really would be very surprised if it didn't perform. Showed my wife and coupled with the acid wrapped left spiral carbon rod the balance and weight is truly amazing. She immediately claimed it. Gone!! Whole outfit cost 310 not including line so I might do it again-although I now have quite a few very light rigs to handle jigs to 250 gms

Going to try jigging. I have a question about electronics. I have a garmin live scope transducer setup on my old boat and am wondering if it would be helpful moving it to the new boat for jigging. I was using it to find sea bass which it did great at. I found it good to about 120 feet in salt water. For me it was a game changer for shallow rock fish. It is not the newer one I have seen advertised that claims deeper specs. I am comfortable with my old boat's garmin and am not sure about the simrad on my new one. Comments?

I can't really say, I haven't upgraded from older Lowrance sounder, which is pretty outdated compared to what is available now. I certainly use it a lot, particularly to find bait, and sometimes I identify salmon. I would think depending on where you are fishing 120' might not be quite enough. I am mostly fishing around campbell river and often find herring are deeper than 120'. However probably most of my best jigging is at less than 150' for sure, although I often do try fishing deeper.

Save yourself some agro-if it will only read 120 in saltwater-it is not enough-the herring are sometimes deeper and if you cannot read deeper than 120 you aren't getting enough detail to up your jigging game-at least where I jig-campbell river.

This foil technique is super cool and perfect for jigs. I’m a sucker for spending too much money to save money. You just have to follow my spoon painting hobby that’s morphed into other painting hobbies to understand. I may have to give this a try at some point between other projects.

Mike: I have a kydex press which i never use. you can give it a try if you want. I’m not sure how you plan on heating up the foil but the press will keep it intact while it cools down.

it’s basically a clamshell style press with soft rubbery material that allows your project to cool off slowly and keep its form. give me a dm if you wanna try it out or text me

Well I promised a report on hot stamp foiling-Got my silicon 10 mm heating pad- not the easiest thing I have ever done and maybe I should listen to my wife who asked me why I was doing it since I had so many jigs. I don't know!! It is finicky. Got to paint the jigs with oil based paints-wait no longer than 2-3 hours(important) then hot press the foil-not sure I am getting the heat from the iron. I can see the potential-anyone have an old george foreman grill they want to get rid of. I waited too long with the rest of the jigs-paint was a day old and wouldn't take. Have at again. Anyone know what type of glue to stick eyes on with. Crazy glue is no good-has acetone and melts most paints. Back to the drawing board and try again

loon or solarez brand uv cure resin will stick eyes on with a blacklight flashlight. Don't get the thinnest one, but slightly goopy. Fly shops have it.
There goes another $40.

Well cheaper than flying to Mexico-have to do something to keep amused!! Canucks ain't helping!! LOL

I continue with my Chinese fishing obsession-gradually having some success-not perfect but very fishable. I was impressed by the spoons-I just did them as an after-thought . need a little more attention to detail-better masking-but I think I have the basics
I bet the spoons will fish better with the coating half torn off. For real.
