Looking for used truck buying advice

Well, one way or another, I hope they update the Tundra soon.

Could help drive down the price on a ten year old one, and historically speaking, buying a ten year old Toyota and driving it for another fifteen years is about my speed.
Apparently there is a new Tundra coming this year . 2022 models I think. I’ve read it’s a twin turbo V6 with decent hp.

not going to hold my breath but that would be interesting. I still want a diesel lol
 
i would use a 6bt in the Zeta
too long, that was my first plan but at nearly 4ft long it would require the fuel tank to be modified, and you would have very little room to spare before the bulkhead

plus if you look at the power curve (torque and Hp) the useable power is nearly dead even with a standard carbed merc/penta 350

Say goodbye to the Tundra's V-8 engines, because Toyota's big pickup will reportedly enter the world with a V-6-only powertrain lineup. Look for higher-end Tundra variants to utilize a variant of the 416-hp 3.4-liter unit found under the hood of the Lexus LS500. Lesser Tundras will likely employ the naturally aspirated 278-hp 3.5-liter V-6 engine of the Tacoma (possibly massaged to produce more than 300 horses).
Given Toyota's hybrid history, the brand may offer the 2022 Tundra with a gasoline-electric hybrid powertrain option, putting it on the vanguard in a segment that is just now warming up to electrification. Such a setup will allow the Toyota truck to properly compete with the 2021 Ford F-150 and its available hybrid powertrain.

HOLLY CRAP I would not have bet money on that one
 
I would rather take bad fuel mileage than crappy reliability. Just my opinion.

I loved my GMC Sierra but it got old with the electrical and front end issues etc.
Right on---had a diesel (6.4L) GMC 2500 Sierra with only 120K miles, it ate ball joints like they were going out of style!
 
Had a 2006 Duramax put 220,000 oilfield km’s on that truck it never saw the shop. Had a 2010 Duramax, put 258,000 oilfield km’s on that truck was never back to the shop from the time I bought it until I traded it in. Had a 2015 Duramax put 187,000 km’s on that truck, never saw the shop once. Currently have a 2019 Duramax have 48,000 km hasn’t been back to the shop for a thing.

But you’ll never get any pulling torque out of a 3.5 litre engine. There’s just no bore and stroke their. That hp is all in the RPM, lose that and those little engines are done.
 
I don't know about that...the Ford 3.5 hits 360 lb-feet at around 2900 RPM...the V8 peaks at about 285 lb/ft @ 4300. The V8 curve is flatter, but the turbo six is way stronger, way earlier.

I'm not an expert on the subject but I think the only reason displacement matters is that you can burn more fuel in more air and therefore extract power from it.

If you use a turbo to stuff fuel and air in...is that really any different? I'm not sure that it is.

The Ford 3.5 is absolutely gutless unless you get the turbo spooling up.

Charts from engines that manufactures put on an engine stand are cheap and easy to make. Hook it up to a load and see. Been around this stuff my whole life, in just about every shape and form of equipment that crawls the earth. Corey_lax pictures says it all. Not saying that Fords 6 doesn’t out perform their 8 but all that says is that their 8 sucks. Put some heads on that 8 open the air ways on it and put a turbo on it. And then put some exhaust on it so it can breath be a much different story, trust me. Apples to apples there is no replacement for displacement.

Time to sell my trusty old 1991 GMC 2500.

I started this thread quite a while ago, looking for used truck buying advice. Just wanted to revert back and say I finally picked one up - a 2006 LBZ Duramax 3/4 ton with 300,000 km on it - a bit much, but the truck is bone stock and well cared for. Pretty happy so far.
Time to sell my trusty old 1991 GMC 2500.
You will come to love that truck, I have an 07 LBZ Crew cab with 457000 Km and it runs fantastic. Went across Canada in 2018 and towed my boat back from PEI did 18000 km all it needed on the trip was a tail light bulb.
It going up for sale my new to me 2019 gets here tomorrow

I have to say I am extremely impressed with how well it does cruising on the highway - the passing power is what has surprised me the most so far - it leaps forward like a sports car.
 
I just bought a 2017 Chevy True North 1/2 ton with 50k on it. Very happy.

It was weird I had the truck a have been looking at for years the Nissan Titan diesel. One came on lot today, and test drove it . To my surprise it was the worst ride in truck I have been on. The Cummins just didn't seemed match for truck. I was actually shocked.

The Chevy had a way better ride. From owning a Titan over the years I am glad I went back. I really tried to like the Toyotas but they didn't have enough room.
