Another point that hasn't been brought up is DSC. The beauty of DSC is being able to call other vessels without cluttering up 16. A big bonus for everyone to get their ROC-M and get an MMSI (basically a phone number for your radio) and unlock the potential of that fancy class D DSC radio you have in your boat.

Digital selective calling is pretty cool, my next boat will be having a DSC VHF for sure...calling your buddy when the bite is on has never been easier..
