The RCMP is still looking for a woman who has been missing after being swept away by the fast-moving Cheakamus River near Whistler on Saturday.

The search efforts recommenced Sunday morning, said Whistler RCMP Staff Sgt. Steve LeClair. Helicopters along the river are carrying out the search from the air and two experienced kayaks have been deployed to search at eye level, he said.

On Saturday, officers located the body of a man who is believed to have drowned in the same incident.

Police were contacted shortly before 4 p.m. Saturday by an area fishing guide who said two of her clients had fallen in the river and were carried away in the current that is being described as ‘hazardous.’

“Search and rescue were called to locate a man floating face-down in the river at about 5:15 (p.m.) and were able to confirm he was deceased,” LeClair said.

The team accessed the area, which is approximately 3 km east of Highway 99 and 20 km south of Whistler, by helicopter.

The victim and missing woman have been tentatively identified by police. According to LeClair, both were British Columbia residents.
