Scent? Herring oil?

Does anyone use herring oil for scent? On hoochies? Just wondering? Will scent wreck your lures?

we sometimes put a little strip of herring on the hook of our hoochie when fishing for springs, for smell.

I don't recommend using any oil or gel on hootchies as it can ruin them over time (mold etc.). I do like using herring gel (oil won't last long at all) on my spoons or jigs most of the time. It will last a long time (sometimes all day) and can easily be removed with a paper towel or cloth if desired for storage. I believe it helps catch fish, it certainly doesn't hurt.

I usually use scent on my jigs, but I'm not sure it does anything. I mean, I was out yesterday and didn't have much luck, but one of the hits I had was the drop after I added scent. I dunno. Probably coincidence as I had also just moved. That's happened a few times, so I still use it, but I was catching 'em before I bought it, too.
