I live in Ladysmith and am fortunate that being only 5 minutes from the launch have some of the best prawning grounds that are offered around Vancouver Island. The beauty of prawning in Stuart Channel is that mostly your dropping your pots in water depths of 230ish to 250ish. Some areas nearby your going much deeper like 270 plus. I’m running Ladner traps that are fishing just as well as my friends that are running the bauer type of trap. Secret is to weight your trap and don’t scrimp on your bait. Each one of my traps are 20 pounds plus, used to run doubles but its quite a grunt for my scotty pot puller with running doubles. I weighted my Ladners with lead around the perimeter of the base. My Ladners are just under 7 pounds so to weight them I made a mold out of wood and poured lead into said mold. Now my traps average about 22 pounds per and man.....when I throw them over do they ever drop! Hitting your mark is key. I used to run live prawns to Vancouver from the commercial guys and they all said that a few feet from hitting your mark makes all the difference in the world.
