Diesel tank clean out

I am trying to get a diesel generator going that has been sitting for years. It is a 6500 Chinese made gen set. Took the fuel line off and it was plugged with a tar like substance. Bought a new fuel line. The problem is the tank has lots of tar in it. What should I be using to dissolve and clean the tank.I pulled the injector and it had clear fuel in it. Thanks in advance.

Metal tank. Tried gas.Brake clean.Engine degreaser. Would not touch it.Nasty stuff.

muriatic acid with some nuts and bolts, shake it up well. protect the paint if you care about it

That "tar like" substance could be the residue of a fuel preservative after all the volatile substances have evaporated off. There are companies that steam clean the inside of the tank such as Klob suggested.
