Crap! There Goes My Hunting Season...

Part of it anyway...

For the past couple of weeks offshore, I have been constantly irritated by an ever expanding hernia just below my sternum. Guess that came about due to slinging a tad too many Biggies over the rail of the boat. Then, another began to form just above that, and the discomfort increased accordingly. Decided to finish the season out before heading in to have it checked over...

Jump forward to yesterday. Near 6 hours in the hospital. Met with Sawbones One about 2 hours into the wait. He looks, and sez You're going nowhere until the Surgeon has a boo... OK.
3 hours and change go by...
Surgeon then has a boo, and says You've got a Problem. No Chit!

Now I'm scheduled for Emergency Surgery on Saturday. Due to the location (too close to the diaphragm) I am not a candidate for the new mesh procedure, so will have to run with the old slice and dice method. OUCH! Been there before, and it took 3 bloody months before I could do anything without pain. Double Dammit!!

So, for the early season at least, all hunting plans just wandered out the window. I have a handful of rather strong Buddies offering to help once I am somewhat mobile (obviously won't be able to pack much if anything out) and I am sincerely thankful for that. However my Alberta Run is once again in jeopardy. Missed last season, and REALLY don't want to miss this one! Seems The Fates are conspiring to keep me away. Triple Dammit!

Man do I EVER Hate this "Growing Old Gracefully" Crap!!!

Sadly,
Nog
Wondering just how long it will be before I need a motorized wheelchair simply to get out there?

Motorized jacked up wheelchair armed with a 17HMR and laser targetting equipment, and enough power to tow an elk out of the bush.

Like the poster says, hang in there. I hope you have a speedy recovery.

Wishing you a quick recovery Nog !

As my Dad (82) said to me, "this growing old business isn't for the faint
of heart"

KNow how you feel Nog. Ended up in Emergency two saturdays back. Emergency CT scan and all the goodies that go along with it. Off work for the best week of weather for the summer. YeeHaw! Only problem was I couldn't leave the house and pretty much spent the next ten days on my back. Crap. Now I'm booked with doctors and specialists for the next two months, although I'm back to work now. Still, it sucks when the equipment stops workin'. Good luck with the surgery and have a speedy recovery.

Thanks Ladz, very much Appreciated!

Gonna be a bit of a rough time methinks. Hunting has always been my FAR preferred season, and I cannot remember missing one in 40 years! Hope to get out with a few of the Young Guns a little later on... maybe...

For those who get to Enjoy: Hunt Hard, Shoot Straight, Kill Clean & Apologize to No-One!

Nog - Stressed!

Keep in touch.... Me an FC might have time to stop by the Hacienda on our way back through town.

You can't blame the fish you brought it all on yourself ;)

Hope it goes back together good for ya

Damn-- that hurts ! Not just on the bod-- the mind too. Yup-- Golden years-- my butt!!!

Sorry to hear that nog I had the same op but was lucky enough to have mine just after hunting season ended . Good luck and speedy recovery

Oh man, that sux, Matt! I hope you heal fast, and get out there. On another note, I'm heading to Alberta tomorrow morning for Archery Whitetail! ;) I should be back your way, for the rut in November. Get well soon!!

Got off the phone with my brother...looks like it will be a mule deer trip, not whitetail. Lots of mulies around on a property his has permission to hunt. No one has hunted it for quite a few years. :D

Ya, know exactly how you feel Nog. Missed last year myself and it seems ones life has gone astray when you can't or don't get to do the things you love to do.

Get well soon!

Thanks for the Well Wishes Folks, Appreciated!

Well, only a few hours left before I wander over there. Guess I am feeling a tad nervous alright. Even though I well understand this ain't all that complicated a procedure, anytime I contemplate Letting anyone run a blade into me tends to make my hair stand on end! Hoping all goes as it should...

Living vicariously has already started it seems. Woke this morning to a call from Ma & Pa. Ma took a most excellent Boone & Crockett (80+ inches!) antelope in Wyoming this morning before I even staggered from the rack! Awesome! Even more awesome this Lady is in her mid-seventies, and still doing exactly whatever she desires! Bodes well for my own longevity should I manage to make it through these little curves life tends to throw at me from time to time! Congrats Ma! Wish I had been there to share!!

So, off I go. I'll try and get back with a report as I can. May be a day or two as I suspect I won't be much in the way of conversation for a little while...

Tight Lines & Straight Shooting Folks!!

Catch ya'll on the flipside...

Good luck and hopes for a speedy recovery.

My self having experienced 5 hernia surgeries, I know the deal well.
Take care and do not push it too soon or you will be back as I found out after # 3.

Cheers

Temporary Reprieve!

Surgeon otherwise engaged when I arrived, so he scheduled a whole battery of tests. Near 3 hours worth. Heart, Lungs, Liver, Kidneys and Pancreas all in "Excellent" shape! Except for the hernias, "Body of a man near half your age" was the word! Who would have figured?

Great News!!

The not so great:
Now on a series of medications over the next few days. Revisit surgery sometime later in the month. Supposed to "take it easy" (and Oh will I EVER!) for the next little while. Pain GONE from the meds! Ahhhhhhhh....

I realize it is simply putting off the inevitable, but the part of me that shudders at the knife is happy! Of course the worrying part of me wonders where we go from here, but for now... Perhaps time to get out and hunt a little (with a strong Buddy in tow) before I have to face the issue down for good.

Relieved!

I was DAMN Surprised myself Lorne! :D

Planning on drifting over here anytime soon? Thinking about a 'toon run shortly...

Wonderin'

Had one of those surgeries back when I was 15. I've been through my fair share of broken bones and surgeries since I was into motorcross and snowboarding but this was one of the worst. They opted for a "local" freezing and I had to be strapped down cause I could feel it all and started freaking out and tried to get up and leave half way through the "gutting". Don't let them talk you into this. Get knocked out and wake up groggy and hung from the heavy narcs. Speaking of drugs......hope you get some good meds! Better to say pain is worse than it is and they will hook it up. I know this too from experience. 8 days of morphine drip. On a cloud! Whoop!

Good luck with that one Nog..
Seems there is a sale on hernia ops.. these days ..Everyone is having one!

Hey Nog does it hurt to laugh? They say it's the best medicine?
Saw this on CHEK news today. The way he snaps his glove and it goes dead silent kills me.

Good luck and speedy recovery.[KfR3wIZ64HU] http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KfR3wIZ64HU&feature=player_profilepage

Actually no longer hurts! Whatever those meds (NOT painkillers) are, they have taken the pain away it seems right well!

Incredibly Refreshing to have nearly each waking moment no longer ruled by that inconvenience! Certainly puts a much better aspect on Life! Methinks maybe I may actually make it through coho and hunting season before the Deadly Deed has to be realized. 'Course that means running a little less hard than I usually do, but hey, at least I'll likely get there! In fact I just might hit the river this afternoon... ;)

Thanks for the support Folks!

Cheers,
Nog
