Bamfield Fishing Reports

I'm looking to take my second trip ever to Ucluelet next week, and I have a few good spots figured out (rats nose, the wreck, surf line, etc.), but I hear alot about the SW corner, south bank, and the shallows. Sometimes people are referring to the big bank as south bank, but I'm wondering if south bank is the bank just a couple miles out of Ucluelet.

I'm especially interested in "the shallows" as I'd love to catch a few halibut while I'm there! I'd appreciate any help... with all the gas/ferry money and time off work to get to Ukee I'd be real grateful!

FISHING REPORT: PORT ALBERNI INLET, BARKLEY SOUND, UCLUELET
(WEST COAST) SOMASS-STAMP RIVER SYSTEM
Doug Lindores
Slivers Charters Salmon Sport Fishing
August 13th 2008

The summer of 2008 has had phenomenal salmon and halibut fishing in Barkley Sound and the water off of Ucluelet. To date most of the Chinook and Coho salmon have been migratory fish making their way down the coastline of Vancouver Island travelling to their home- rivers, streams, or creeks. Halibut fishing has been good offshore at the Big Bank, South Bank and the Wreck, to name just a few areas. Barkley Sound and the Port Alberni Inlet should begin to fill with the areas returning Chinook and Coho quite quickly. The last four or five days have been probably the slowest fishing seen all summer. It has been scratchy in the Sound and most of the salmon out at the various banks have been small and are in very deep water. The Port Alberni Inlet has still been slow but Monday August 11th was the first actual day where the morning fishing produced a good number of Chinook in the high teens and low twenties. There have been reports of a few fish over thirty pounds since people began fishing the Port Alberni Inlet with intensity about one week ago. The Tyee club has a few thirty plus pounders listed in their daily record book. Most of the Chinook recorded from the Inlet have been taken on the China Creek Wall. Guides and sport anglers fishing close to Ucluelet are beginning to hit Chinook close to the beach. Over the weekend The Red Can was good as was Little Beach. Tofino has reported some great Chinook and Coho fishing over the past few days. The salmon close to the beach are probably returning fish coming into Barkley Sound and those salmon returning to Robertson Creek Hatchery in Port Alberni. It is expected that there will be a good return of Chinook and Coho returning to all of this areas rivers, creeks and streams. Robertson Creek Hatchery is expecting a surplus of Chinook and Coho which means the sport fishery should be very good in August and September.
The sockeye return to date has met the forecast return. Water levels and flow conditions have been very good all summer for these salmon. The return of mature sockeye is now over 150,000 with good returns going into Sproat and Great Central Lakes. The return of Jacks has also been excellent, which is a good indicator for 2009 returns. There has not been a sockeye fishery in the Port Alberni Inlet for two years now. It is certainly hoped that returns will get back to the high numbers once experienced in the Port Alberni Inlet. For the past few years indicators have shown good survival in the ocean as conditions have been very good.

Port Alberni Inlet
Barkley Sound
Port Alberni Inlet fishing has been slow but usually by the 15th of August Chinook begin showing in good numbers. Coho usually begin coming into the inlet at the end of the month or beginning of September. Most anglers have been fishing the Franklin River area out by the boundary line. Bells Bay is usually the first stopping area for the Chinook in the early part of the season. A few Chinook in the twenties and low thirties have been taken to date. Many of the sport fishermen fishing out there are campers at McTush and China Creek. The China Creek Marina has recorded some Chinook catches as has Clutesi Haven Marina. Saturday, Sunday and Monday of this week have each shown higher catches each day with the best numbers coming from inside waters close to China Creek. The China Creek wall and Underwood have been two areas with the best sport fishing. Some anglers will troll anchovy early in the season. Usually leader length is a little shorter than what might be used in Barkley Sound or offshore. The cop car hootchie has been reported as a great lure over the last couple of days. However red and bubble gum pink octopus hootchies or mp red and pink will be the best choice of color by most anglers in the days to come. Leader length of 42 inches is often the most popular behind a red or green glow hotspot flasher. Guide Doug of Slivers Charters Salmon Sport Fishing has not fished the inlet to date but will begin mid week. Usually four rods will fly with one having an anchovy, one flying the AORL12 hootchie and the other two rods with an Octopus red and Pink. Fishing salmon in the Port Alberni inlet should really heat up in the weeks to come. The Port Alberni Derby is very early this year and will occur at a very peak time.

Barkley Sound in surf line locations and just offshore three to five miles has been the area most boats from Slivers Charters Salmon Sport Fishing have been concentrating. Guide Dougs’ largest Chinook to date for guests is 32 pounds. Several Chinook have been in the teens and low twenties. The largest Coho to date is a fourteen pound hatchery fish. Swale Rock has been very good as has the Kirby Point, Edward King, and the Ship Island area. The past few days have had guests fish these areas with guides Doug, John, Mel, Henri, and Wayne. On Saturday of the past weekend, guests from Victoria fished with Doug in the Swale Rock and Gilbraltor area first thing in the morning. The area was covered in a very thick plankton bloom but fortunately two fish at twenty-five and fifteen pounds were picked up. Both fish were in seventy feet of water and hit the silver-glow four inch coyote spoon. These were the only two fish of the morning in the Swale area and after two hours of non productivity a move was made to Edward King. Plenty of fish were showing in this area and within ten minutes a 32 pound beauty hit the AORL12 hootchie behind a plaid flasher. Guests on board had fortune to pick up two more Chinook in the fifteen pound range and one ten pound Coho. Guide Wayne fished five to seven miles offshore and had a productive day with Chinook and Coho in the ten to fourteen pound range. Biggest fish of the day for Waynes’ guests was 27 pounds. Sunday and Monday the 10th and 11th of August definitely were slow days in the Sound. Guide John picked up one Chinook just off of Edward King which came in at twenty pounds. Most of Sunday and Monday guests fished the three, five, and seven mile areas off the surf line. There is a good number of salmon in these areas but they are ranging eight to twelve pounds and are in deep water up to 175 feet. The best lure for these fish was again the silver glow hootchie on a shorter leader. Anchovy in a purple haze teaser head was also working well. There is high number of reported salmon coming down the coast close to the beach and it is expected that many of these will fill into Barkley Sound, which should create some great fishing for the next month.

Ucluelet

Guide Mike has been concentrating on halibut and ling cod over the past week. Many guides and sport anglers fishing the Big Bank have done well on halibut. There are salmon on the bank but again they are not large fish. Coho off and on are very thick. South Bank also has good numbers of halibut and there are a few good sized Chinook and good numbers of Coho. Mike has had a few Chinook at South Bank in the high twenties and has had a couple in the thirty plus range close to the Ucluelet Harbor at the Red Can. The Chinook that stay close to the beach usually come into Barkley Sound and after resting and feeding move up into the Alberni Inlet before heading to the Robertson Creek Hatchery. Usually guides will fish halibut for those guests who are on a salmon-halibut combo trip first thing in the morning. Once halibut fishing is complete guides will often move in closer to the beach for salmon. Little Beach is open for salmon fishing this season and one will find guides covering that area quite heavily on a daily basis. Mike has had been successful halibut fishing on the jig and also using a spreader bar with salmon parts and large herring. Chinook Salmon have been hitting anchovy in a chartreuse or purple haze Rhys Davis teaser head in 80 to 110 feet of water at South Bank and The Red Can. White and glow hootchies have also been fairly steady lures in the area.
August is often foggy in the area. Remember safety is of concern. If your boat is not equipped with radar have a radar reflector so larger vessels can see you on their screen. A VHF radio and GPS is of importance also. Check weather and wave conditions daily.

There will be many fabulous August and September fishing days in the Ucluelet area. The migratory flow will continue and fish returning to nearby areas will create some excellent sport fishing.

The Labor Day Weekend will be very busy in Port Alberni as the city hosts one of B.C.’s largest saltwater derbies. The festivities begin at derby headquarters, Clutesi Haven Marina on the Friday evening of the summers’ final long weekend. Salmon fishing begins on Saturday, Sunday and Monday morning at 6 am. The derby closes on Labor Day Monday at 3 pm. Each day the three biggest fish are awarded with prizes of $3,000, $2,000, and $1,000. The biggest fish of the derby will reward the fortunate angler with $7,000 along with the $3,000 biggest fish of the day prize making the winning fish worth $10,000.

The Fog Ducker

Just got back from 4 days fishing and i did very poorly in the fishing part of the trip but it was still fun. fished all over the sound except the swale side and ventured out to 7 mile. Fished hard all day everyday pretty much and had 10-15 coho and tons of springs 2-10lbs as well as one 20lber. Coho were 5-10 offshore but we got two around 13-15lbs inside. Diplock had a bunch yesterday mid afternoon. Most guys were hitting 1-2 springs a morning first light. Anchovies 35ft were hittin the springs and coho and spoon at 60ft hit the feeders.Still a great trip even with slow fishing lots of whales bears and dolphins. Fished pill this morning lost one decent fish and lots of feeders. There were a few nice fish caught but nothin great mostly smaller 8lb or so feeders. Ill toss some pics up later

Back from a 3 dayer at Seabeam. A lot of long faces there, especially guys fishing inside. Sounded ok last week but it was a tough slog to find fish this year.
First day 7 mile, no springs but 2 for 2 hatchery coho at 70'. We awarded a new catch and release trophy when we were tied up and unloading, buddy dropped the 12 lber into the chuck as he slipped on the swim grid. In hind sight I should have dove in.
Next day was sloppy at Beal and my (once a year) boys farmed a couple nice chances before one started to chum the water.
Took him in and fished the fog with nothing but critters.
Tried the wall inthe afternoon and saw zero fish taken.
Next day we slammed out to the bank and had our limit of hali and one spring bouncing bottom with white(ish) hootchies. Brough the gear up to 100 and found some springs using bait. A couple of low teens in the boat before the rollers started to break. After losing our next couple including a screamer we bailed towards 7 mile = Squat. 5 mile = squat and that was enough.
Last day headed for the bank but there was nothing doing. Pounded 7 mile for 3 hours and released a dozen or so undersize springs and a few wild coho. Headed in to 5 mile and started our last tack towards the beach. Closer to four mile found a school of hatchery springs. First one at 140 then the bottom rod went off. (200') Both rods back down bouncing bottom and a double header. 4 high teen clones in 1/2 hour. Saved the trip. Ran out of chovies and tried gootchie and hardware but zippo.
The bait around Bamfield was unbeleivable.
Osama, Tried to reach you but no luck. See you at the chum derby.
Noggin, Thanks for the info, hope that freigter (sp?) missed you.
Almost forgot, At 27 mile I crapped my pants [:0] when I looked at the downrigger pounding there was a 'very large' sunfish swimming away with it's fin caught taking the cable with it for a minute before it unhooked itself. Took a minute to register what it was.

Finally there's a couple 1/2 price self guided spots avialable for Tasu next week. Anyone interested pm me.

Cheers
Tortuga. :D

Tortuga what boat were you in we probaly crossed paths. Fog ducker hali seemed very slow.We are noobs at it though. We really wanted one so we fished large spoons and an assortment of hootchies right on the bottom for hours on end with nothing to show. ALso jigged grubs and a small coho head with zip but i heard of one caught i think. Lotsa people jigging on 7mile pinnicle. We watched them closely and saw none caught. 20-27 mile there were lots though still.Hopefully some more springs show inside there prob late although they are hittin fish in the inlet now so maybe they are just shooting through. Heres some pics didnt get any of the big coho we got inside though wish i had.

We were on a 22' Sea Ray, blue canvas with a white igloo on the swim grid.
The hali were between 180 -220 bouncing balls on bottom with large white hootchies. Bigger ones were deeper. Gaffed em, beat the crap out of them and into the cooler.

BAMFIELD area is still abit slow, fish are starting to move in the popular spots but in small schools it seems.Swale Rock was good the past couple of later afternoon tides.Lots of jellyfish close to Bamfield, hard to fish with those critters all over the gear. This weekend coming up should be much better, going up again on Friday morning...GOING TO BE HOT!!

Went out of Bamfield on Monday, ran over to South Bank. It was loaded with fish, our largest was a 22 pound spring, followed by a 20# Coho!! All in all we had about a dozen or more Salmon up to the boat so we got to choose the lucky ones to come home with us. The dogfish were actually hitting on my aftifical lures after I switched over from bait. I have never caught so many doggies on artifical lures before! So needless to say they took their toll on the gear somewhat. Going back up after this storm passes, hopefully it will draw some fish into the sound now :D

thanks for the update. i am heading to Bamfield this Saturday for 3 days. It is great to have some current information !

Bait didnt produce but white hooch did. In Total

Was out this last weekend, ended up with 11 Salmon and 1 Halibut. The fish are starting to move into the Sound now. With fish now showing at Beal, Whittlestone, and The Wall. The backside of Sanford also saw some action. We only tried Halibut fishing for about 1 hour, got some huge rockcod along with our 15 pound Halibut. We picked up 8 Salmon the first day,:D biggest was about 18 pounds, with green anchovy head holders seeming to be the favorite. The next day we got only 3 Salmon but we had our chances at probly another 5-6 that didn't stay on the hook long enough to feel once we picked up the rods and 1 that snapped my leader!! All in all it seems to me that maybe the fish are running a little late this year and just now are starting to show on the inside of the sound in pretty good numbers. With the derby coming up this weekend it should, for a change, make for some pretty good fishing around the time it is held!
Heading back out on Wed. to take out a fellow and his three sons for a trip arranged off this site! I might get one more chance to report before the big derby!

Hey Guy's Well , Group of friends just back from the Nooke , Fishing offshore still remains great ( Rats Nose ) was insane , non stop on anything put down , fish are still on the smaller side , largest spring was only 18 lbs , Swale , Pill , Diplock were Quiet !! Whiitlestone , Little Beale also fairly quiet , they said they had a pretty decent morning with 3 large fish Sunday around the Kirby area , one of there boats did quite well off Effingham , apparently they got right on top of a large school , hooked around 20 springs in 5 -6 hours , 6 fish brouht back to the dock , sounds promising !! ( catch and release , selective barbless )again not huge fish , but some in the low 20's . White hoochies seem to be the ticket( red brow ) , or anchovy with greens !! some boats did well , some not . the week before sounded much better , the full moon might have been an issue , don't know , I have several more friends going up this weekend , keep ya posted , I will be there next week , finally ( Married Man now !! ) Can't wait !! Don't care if the fishing spotty , lookin forward to the pops , and hanging out ! I will keep the reports coming in , Cheers , the Fog Ducker . :D:D:D

Just back from 3 days at Bamfield ( sat/sun/mon ) . Fished inside. Best spot was the north east side of Fleming. We got a 30 and a 20....the rest in the teens. Red and pearl anchovie head behind red flashers...27 to 31 feet..... worked best for us. I tried hootchies and spoons...nothing.

In total, 14 fish for 4 guys.

The boat now goes back to Sooke. Hope the coho show up there this fall !

Thks for the information overall on Bamfield.....it was very helpful.

We are heading up to stay at Kildonan next Thursday for a few days with 5 boats and 18 guys from work. Most fish around Pill Point,Bamfield Wall and Kirby.
No-one ventured offshore last year as all boats are 18 to 21 footers.
hopefully we will have some pics and stories to share .Preferably no disaster stories..
Just have to check the sea ice availability up there. Some guys buy in Port Alberni some in Kildonan at the gas dock. Haven't been up there this year yet so we will have to make a few calls.
How is the road to China Creek this time of year? Last year some launched there and some in the river in Port..
Decisions decisions...[?]
Looking forward to catching the first ferry out of Horseshoe Bay on Thursday, makes for an early start coming from Abbotsford.[:I]
