Bamfield Fishing Reports

So, back to topic. How is the fishing in our wonderfull Barkley Sound anyways. Enjoy it while we can, it might not be there tomorrow. Tight lines and big springs.

Vernon Bay and Swale Rock Aeas Hot

Fishing the Vernon Bay and Swale Rock area of the Sound has been very good for a full week. Chinook up to 22 pounds have been taken. Some guides and sport fishermen have been fishing the Port Alberni side or entrance to Canoe Pass and have been doing very well. Others have been fishing the Swale Rock side of Canoe Pass with the same excellent results. Guide Mike picked up four nice salmon on Tuesday and Wednesday and lost 4 more each day in the Vernon Bay area. The Chinook have been between 14 and 22 pounds. Anchovy in an army truck glow teaser head has been working well. The four inch cop car coyote spoon has also been great. A few fishermen and charters have been fishing Meares and have had success. It has been rough however and has been difficult to fish so many sport fishermen have stayed away. The salmon at Meares and other notable areas such as Kirby, Sanford and Edward King are probably good but many have not fished those areas. Reports to the north have stated good numbers of salmon are close to the beach. These fish should come into Barkley Sound to rest and feed on the rich bait supply.Fishing in the Sound should continue to be very good for the summer.

FISHING REPORT: PORT ALBERNI INLET, BARKLEY SOUND, UCLUELET (WEST COAST)
SOMASS-STAMP RIVER SYSTEM

JUNE 18TH, 2008
DOUG LINDORES
SLIVERS CHARTERS SALMON SPORT FISHING

Time seems to be moving very quickly as we are already into the middle of June. June has been a great month of fishing for sport anglers and salmon fishing charter guides off of Ucluelet and in various areas of Barkley Sound. To date most of the Ucluelet fishing for both salmon and halibut has been fairly close to the beach. Barkley Sound salmon fishing has been best from Vernon Bay out to Effingham. The Port Alberni Inlet is quiet but Sockeye Salmon are entering the Somass River daily and making their way through the counters and entering Sproat Lake and Great Central Lake.

Port Alberni Inlet and Barkley Sound
Usually by mid-June their have been reports of the first sockeye catches in the Port Alberni Inlet. DFO has issued a reported estimate that 150,000 sockeye are returning back to the system. This is a very low return and there will not be any fishing of sockeye unless the return looks brighter. User groups have curtailed any fishing in June. There will also not be any fishing of sockeye in July unless returns look better.
The counters have been in place for Great Central Lake since May 14th and on May 20th they were in place for Sproat Lake. The river water flow has been excellent and will continue into the early summer because of the continued high snow pack. This of course has helped keep water temperatures very cool which the sockeye prefer. Escapement totals to June 9th are 2,802 sockeye into Sproat Lake and 219 sockeye into Great Central Lake. This is the first report of the season and escapement reports will be provided once or twice per week. The next report is expected on June 17th. Numbers should be much higher by this date. Sproat Lake returns are traditionally stronger in the early part of the season.
The Port Alberni Inlet should become a busy area for angling in August. Good returns of Chinook and Coho are forecast. The department of fisheries has forecast a surplus report for both species with Chinook returns being predominately five and three year olds.

The Chinook fishing over the last ten days in Barkley Sound has been excellent. Charter salmon fishing guides and sport anglers have had several days where they have had limits or close to limits on Chinook ranging from 15 to 25 pounds. The areas of Vernon Bay, Harold Island, and the water off of Swale Rock and Meares have been very good. On Saturday guide Jon picked up six Chinook with the two largest weighing in at 25 and 26 pounds. Jon treated guests with the best fishing close to Harold Island and the Port Alberni side of the entrance to Juliette Passage. There has been plenty of bait in the area which of course brings the salmon in to feed before continuing on their migratory route back to their original river to spawn. Most of the salmon around the Harold Island area were in 100 feet of water and were hitting a green/glow four inch coyote spoon behind a green flasher and 42 inches of leader. Other than the coyote spoon the only other hits came on a green spatterback. Anchovy which during the early part of the season has been excellent was not the answer on Saturday for Jon. However for guide Mike, Anchovy in a green glow Rhys Davis teaser head has been working at Swale and Meares. Chinook in these two areas are in 80 to 110 feet of water.
Diplock was a good spot to fish on Friday for some. Reports that one angler and his fishing friend picked up four chrome Chinook weighing in from 15 to 18 pounds on a white hootchie and a watermelon coyote spoon. If the bait continues to pour into Barkley Sound the Chinook and sooner or later Coho will also be there to feed. June and July can be great fishing months for migratory salmon coming down the West Coast of the Island. It seems that this is certainly again the case for June 2008. Other areas on the surfline of the Sound that can have fantastic fishing are Cree and Austin Island and also Kirby Point and Edward King.

Ucluelet
Ucluelet fishing has been very good for several days. Guides Mike, Dave, and Al have all been doing well on their halibut or salmon or salmon-halibut combo trips. The halibut have continued to remain tight to the beach but there are promising reports of more being picked up out at the Big Bank.
Guide Dave treated guests from Vancouver with some good halibut and salmon fishing late in the week. Fishing at the Lighthouse Bank which is only five miles south of Ucluelet the Vancouver guests picked up six halibut with the largest coming in at 40 pounds. Two great salmon weighing 18 pounds a piece were also brought to the boat. Bouncing whole large herring off the oceans floor and sometimes 10 to 15 feet off the bottom seemed to work very well. The salmon were not in the mid water but seemed to want to stay in the deep and were picked up just off the bottom. Guide Dave has also had some excellent Chinook fishing at Longbeach. Mike who has been fishing in the Ucluelet area daily when weather permits has had some good days at Great Bear and The Wreck. Over the weekend The Wreck produced some smaller halibut and good sized Chinook ranging 12 to 20 pounds. Anchovy in a purple haze teaser head and a UV green worked very well for the Chinook. The halibut were hitting army truck hootchies bounced off the bottom on the troll. Ucluelet has had some wonderful fishing. All of the sport fishing guides favorite spots have been hot. It is expected that with controlled fishing to the North that the fishing in the areas of Ucluelet and Barkley Sound will be very good. The Alaskan Commercial fleet is fishing 52% less. This permits more salmon to come into West Coast Vancouver Island waters.

Somass-Stamp River
There is currently not a sport fishery in the river. With sockeye numbers low the days of lining up on the river bank are over. It is expected that in the fall, Chinook, Coho, and summer steelhead fishing should be very good. We have put together an excellent fall fishing and accomodation package. At the moment there is little availability in September. October and November are also excellent river fishing months.

Remember to plan you Labor Day Weekend plans. The Port Alberni Labor Day Weekend Salmon Derby is always a great hit. The fishing in this years’ derby will occur during the last two days of August and the first day of September. There should be plenty of Chinook and Coho in the Port Alberni Inlet and Barkley Sound. With the prediction of a great return of five year old Chinook there should be some large salmon weighed in during this years’ derby. Make your plans and come to this years Port Alberni Labor Day Weekend Salmon fishing Derby.

The Fog Ducker

Was up on thursday friday, fished kirby in the morning, saw that pretty much every boat on theursday got a few fish, except for me.
Got skunked that day. Friday morning went to kirby again, no fish caught that i saw, but there was a lot of radio chatter from swale, so we went there, saw more caught but we just had one hook up. I cant remember the last trip that we never got one, i guess this week well change that around. Hey Coyotee spooner, how did you do

Lance

Hi Lance , Sorry to hear about your trip . It is a odd year , hope it gets better soon !! I am a fiend of " Coyote Spooner " ( Dean )We are heading up for 4 day's this week , I will have a fresh report when i get back , I just left a message with Dean to see how he did , he usually does very well , maybe not as good as the " Fog Ducker " but pretty good !! hahaha , cheers Dean !! Did ya get a chance to get out to 5--6-7 Mile at all , or here of anyone that did , appreciate the info in advance , Take Care , Felix.,..

The Fog Ducker

Heard a report that 5 mile was the zone to be in a couple days ago.

Swale was awesome all weekend. Kirby was giving them up on Friday and Saturday, but went dead Sunday.

Moved over to the wall and had three and lost a couple in short order.

Haven't talked to anyone going out to the banks this week because there were so many fish in the sound. Would like to know also.

Gimee the gaff!!!

I've heard from a couple of guys that fished offshore that 23 Mile was pretty darn decent with limits of halis and some chinook. Here's hoping the fish stay around for a while. I'll be up there this weekend (along with everyone else it sounds like) and hope to get offshore if conditions permit. Good luck all.
Cheers
RBF

just came back from Ucluelet and had a great time, the weather the day b4 we got there was crappy and the day we left, the 2 days we fished rocked. I believe from my experience that the fishing for springs is in a declining trend, i say this because we fished 3-5 mile bank and only got 1 salmon in 2 days, 5 hours each day. 5 years ago, that spot would have produced many undersized and smaller springs. Like some have said it has been hot, we were fishing around numerous boats on Saturday but didnt see a dam fish(5 hours), it did get better after we left, lol. Swale is good as noted and we did get our springs there, the Big bank is Excellent as one of the top guides out of Ucluelet showed me. The hali fishing was great in close which is a huge bonus

FISHING REPORT: PORT ALBERNI INLET, BARKLEY SOUND, UCLUELET
(WEST COAST) SOMASS-STAMP RIVER SYSTEM
June 24th 2008
Doug Lindores
Slivers Charters Salmon Sport Fishing

Port Alberni Inlet
Barkley Sound
The Port Alberni Inlet is very quiet. In past years one could easily have counted 600 sport boats or more spread between the Port Alberni Harbor and Nahmint Bay fishing sockeye salmon by mid June. This year however is quiet different. With only 150,000 sockeye forecast to return to the Somass River system there is absolutely no retention of sockeye for any user group. The sockeye return to the river and carry on to either Sproat Lake or Great Central Lake. Up to June 17th the counters have recorded 12,980 sockeye returning to Sproat Lake and 1,232 to Great Central Lake. The usual pattern of larger returns to Sproat Lake at the beginning of the year is normal. Conditions for returning sockeye have been excellent. The flow of water is good and moderate to cool water temperatures is also very good for the fish as it make it easy for the sockeye salmon to return to their natural river. With a continued cool spring and early summer the snowpack in the nearby mountains will continue to pour cool water into the river system. For conservation reasons let’s hope that many sockeye come to the system early. Sockeye often continue returning right until September.
The Port Alberni Inlet will however become a busy fishing area later in the summer. By the 10th of August Chinook salmon returning back to Robertson Creek Hatchery will show. Often some great fishing mornings can begin at Bells Bay (Franklin) or areas of China Creek early in the season. The fish will then often push past the China Creek area and into the Port Alberni harbor. Many people world wide will fish the area as recreational anglers on their own or with a salmon charter guide looking for that trophy salmon. By the end of August the Chinook begin to hit their peak and the first Coho begin to filter in which makes it extra exciting for all sport fishermen in the Port Alberni Inlet
The 2008 sport fishing season for Chinook and Coho on the West Vancouver Island coast should be quite good. Surplus amounts of salmon are forecast to return to the Robertson Creek Hatchery which should create some very good sport salmon fishing not only in the Inlet but Barkley Sound as well.

Barkley Sound
The salmon fishing in Barkley Sound has been very good. Migratory fish swimming down the outside of Vancouver Island have been coming into feed on the rich bait fish in the Sound. Late last week and into the weekend and early part of this week many guides and sport fishermen were picking up limits of Chinook salmon. (Limit is two per day per angler) The great fishing has actually been going on since the first part of June. Guides Doug and John of Slivers Charters Salmon Sport Fishing have done very well on their trips in the Swale Rock area. Guide Doug with guests from Florida fished on the troll close to Howard Point mid week with little success early in the day. However on the slack tide a great bite came on with four of five Chinook boated. The fish were great battlers and all weighed in the 20 to 24 pound range. The guests from Florida were exhausted but for them the day was extremely pleasant even with somewhat poor weather. They were able to watch a small pod of killer whales come into the area to play and the eagles were extremely entertaining. Many individuals are unaware of the wildlife in the area. It is not uncommon to see a few black bears on each trip.
Guide Doug has had his best success on anchovy. The glow army truck and the UV green Rhys Davis Teaser Head have both been working well behind the green glow in the dark hotspot flasher. Leader Length is usually five and a half to six feet.
The best area to fish is in water at 250 where the fish are sitting in 70 to 100 feet. Some fishermen have been successful at 50 to 60 feet on the ocean side of Swale. One guide has been fishing the area and trolls up toward Gilbraltor with coyote spoons only and is doing well with some good sized fish. Monday the 23rd of June he had some excellent fishing with most of the fish between 12 and 22 pounds.
Guide John of Slivers Charters has been fishing more towards Vernon Bay and trolling up to Swale Rock. On the weekend his crew from Vancouver B.C. were treated with a great catch of Chinook but these fish were a bit smaller weighing from 12 to 18 pounds. John has had great success on the glow green four inch coyote spoon. He uses only 42 inches of leader where many fishermen go with a five to six foot leader. John on the weekend picked up three Chinook on this spoon and the others on anchovy in a glow army truck Rhys Davis Teaser head behind a green hotspot flasher.
Other areas of Barkley Sound have had some good days. Pill Point, Alan Point and Diplock had some good fishing mid- week. Meares has had some incredible days although a lot of fisher people are not concentrating in the area. We are expecting the fishing to continue to be good. Coho should begin to turn up in larger numbers soon. July can also be an extremely great month. Usually by the months end returning fish to the sound and tributary creeks and rivers in the area and the Robertson Creek Hatchery fish from Port Alberni begin to show.

Ucluelet
Ucluelet continues to have good fishing. There are reports of Chinook and halibut out at the big bank. The Chinook however are smaller than the fish on inside waters. The halibut are bigger. Guide Mike has stayed fairly close to Ucluelet. He has been fishing Southbank, The Wreck, and Great Bear most often. On those not so nice west coast days Mike has come up and fished in Barkley Sound.
On Friday and Saturday of last week Southbank was extremely good for halibut and Chinook. Bouncing off the bottom on the troll Mike picked up 6 halibut each day using salmon bellies, large herring and a coyote spoon that he refers to as Superman. The Chinook have been hitting anchovy in a glow or chartreuse teaser head in the mid-water. The Moby Dick hootchie which is white has been working well also. At the Wreck the halibut fishing is best jigging. Mike feels that the halibut are of better quality and size at The Wreck. Most of the halis are 20 to 25 pounds. The salmon are hitting almost anything. There is a mix of Chinook and Coho. There was one recent day where the Chinook have been difficult to get the gear down to due to the large numbers of Coho. We are expecting the fishing in the Ucluelet area to really improve. The local troll commercial fleet is now completed its fishery. Alaska has cut back 52% of its commercial fishery. This means that there should be more fish swimming into the area. This should also help the Barkley Sound fishing to be sensational most of the summer and early fall.
Individuals coming to Ucluelet for recreational fishing should be aware of all safety procedures. Lifejackets, VHF radio, GPS, Radar Reflector, and even radar are of great importance. There can be some wonderful days on the open Pacific but once and a while the fog can move in very unexpectedly. Good fishing to all but remember safety is important. Check marine weather forecasts before heading out.

Somass-Stamp River
There is currently not any sport fishing in the Somass River system. With the non retention and closure of sockeye the banks of the river are very lonely this June. It is not an uncommon sight to see many bar fishermen line the banks of the Somass early in the morning casting into the river in attempts to hook a sockeye. River fishing will pick up in mid September. The DFO is expecting a surplus of Chinook and Coho which is absolutely wonderful for those keen river fisher persons. Mixed with summer steelhead the fall fishing through November should be spectacular. We are encouraging people to book their trips now as September is entirely booked. The fishing and accommodation package is a sensational opportunity. If you have not fished the river before and you are a novice we will take time to teach you.

Port Alberni Salmon Festival
The Port Alberni Salmon Festival will take place during the Labor Day Weekend. We are expecting some good sized fish to be weighed in this year. The returning Chinook are expected to be mainly three and five year olds. There should be some good sized fish in the mix this year. Call Doug of Slivers Charters for details concerning this years Derby.

Thanks Doug - Felix , the Fog Ducker

The Fog Ducker

I was up at poett nook from fri to sun. Fished Kirby, Cree, and Swale. Cree = 0 fish, Kirby = 3 fish ( 1 for me, 1 for the seal, 1 chicken), and Swale = 3 for 6. All the fish were springs. Swale area was the hot spot. Most fish were on white hootchies @ 70'. Sounds like the fishing is picking up in most areas. Good to hear. I'll be headed up again in July, so hopefully it's still good then. Tight lines.

ill make a bet that Swale is a shadow of itself then, it never stays that good for very long into July, Red Can /3 mile will again pick up at that point, its only a guess but an educated one

The Red Can is just outside Ucluelet Harbour just to the left of Amphitrite point. Good bet for Springs. Watch your sounder as there is lots of lead hungry pinacles.

Early in July... Swale might still be good. Later July???

But you are moving up to Ucluelet now... and the later part of July - that would probably be a good thing! If in Uki I always start at Wya, Eagle's Nest, or run out from the Red Can until I hit 134 feet of water? Have found "The Red Can" to be very hit and miss that time of year. And when it's slow at those points I would follow the cattle boats.

In Barkley or out of Bamfield... I would start... Early morning, Offshore to Rats for sure! Afternoon when winds pick up... back to Kirby or Cree!

Just my 2 cents! :)

fished kirby this morning... couldnt find chovies because we got in to alberni too late... just used hootchies and had only 2 hits.. landed one small 10# then moved to pill pt. nothin....

headin out again tomorrow probably start at diplock or kirby

waddy

Heading over for 3 days starting saturday, will post when I get back. Hope to get off shore for hallies, going to be working, Pill, Swale, Kirby, Lip lock,,,,I mean Diplock. for springs,
be posting soon
