Fished Diplock mostly for springs, did ok over the weekend. Had to work hard for them, most weighed between 10 and 23 lbs. Kirby, producing a few along with the Wall, Swale and off shore. Weather was great, company even better!
Looking forward to going back.

I spent last weekend out in bamfield and offshore was on fire on sat. and slower on sun.

Sat. we hooked an honest 20+ springs up to 18lbs offshore. inshor locations were a little hit or miss but we scraped together 4-5 fish from right out front bamfield.

Nothing huge out there yet, but plenty of fish to keep busy.

Fished Pill Point on Tuesday morning. Got into 6 Springs all on Anchovie at 100' plus. Kept four between 8 - 15lbs and threw back two smaller ones. One was even a white, rare for way in there. Best setup was purple glow hotspot flasher with purple haze chovie head with a 6' leader. Fed a couple of eagles right behind the boat with some small rockfish, what a treat to see them that close. Tight lines and big smilies. COD JIGGER.

Hi , Well , Just got back last night from the Nooke , fished Saturday morning on the bank ( 6 mile - 7 mile ) fished halibut hard , still not much happening here yet , very odd!! we usually do very well here on this date , so , pulled up the gear to 100 to 120 feet , hit 3 springs between 8 - 14 lbs , also not up to par for this time of year , all caught with 5.0 Glo Flo and Mongoose Coyote Spoons. Day 2 , toughed it out on a lumpy ride out to 20 - 22 mile ( Sunday ), to find fairly calm waters , a very eventful next 3 hours , we fished 2 rods , 1 Army truck hootchie , red plaid flasher ( thanks Bish n Son ) the other being a 5.0 Coyote Watermelon , 42 in. leader , we had 6 Halibut between 5 - 25 lbs in the boat with in 1 hour between the 3 of us , then pulled up our gear to 60 - 120 feet for 6 springs kept ( selectively )between 15 - 20 lbs , perfect Blue chrome Red Springs , and released at least a dozen more , untouched or netted , Barbless Hooks !!!!! We also kept 3 large ling cod while fishing for Hali's . Crazy Day ,The Dolphins and Whales entertained us the whole way back , was there ever allot of them , pretty cool to see them play !! back at the dock at 1:00 pm. Took Monday day Morning off , fished Monday afternoon at Swale , Kirby and a few passes on the South West side of Fleming with no results , ( Fleming was good in the morning ) Based on seeing and talking to most boats coming in , the inside is quite spotty , right place , right time. There are fish , just not as good as last year (s) Crabbing was good , prawning was not great , we did eat them every night , but brought nothing home !! The inside is not as good as people are saying , I spoke to over 20 fisherman in the area and seen there catches , just not so !! My seasonal spot is right by the cleaning table , hope tis helps , Cheers , Felix.... ( P.s. ) can someone tell me how to insert Images on my reports , I have some great shots !! thanks again....

The Fog Ducker

Great report FD. Once you get a day like that on the banks, it makes scratching with a big fleet on the inside much less appealing. I'll be out there in 3 weeks on a friend's boat. Meanwhile, I need to find a safer locale for my little boat next week. Inside Barkley sounds so/so, as does Malcolm so far. It's too hot here in the interior and there's not much for whales/dolphins at the local lakes.

Thanks again for your report Doug ,You Pro's seem to have allot better success than us !! I never did fish Meares or Edward , Cree at all , maybe I should have tried , that's Fishing for ya !! , cheers..........

FISHING REPORT: PORT ALBERNI INLET, BARKLEY SOUND, UCLUELET
(WEST COST) SOMASS-STAMP RIVER SYSTEM

JULY 3rd, 2008
DOUG LINDORES
SLIVERS CHARTERS SALMON SPORT FISHING

The salmon fishing in the Barkley Sound and Ucluelet areas has been very good. June ended with some of the best fishing of the year and perhaps the best over the last couple of years, especially in the Sound. The Chinook have been ranging in size from 10 to 25 pounds. Coho over the July long weekend have showed up in the Ucluelet and Barkley Sound areas in good numbers also. The Coho are averaging in weight from 7 to 10 pounds and are very scrappy. July should be another good month for salmon fishing. The migratory fish coming down the west coast of Vancouver Island are in good numbers. Halibut fishing seems to be now concentrated out at the Rats’ Nose at the Big Bank.

Port Alberni Inlet Sockeye Report
The sockeye escapement has been fantastic since the last report. The migration of sockeye into Great Central Lake has caught up to the numbers of sockeye entering Sproat Lake. The water flow continues to be very good with the water continuing to be cool which is so important to the return. There continues to be some big schools coming into the Inlet. The test seine boat is now sounding and doing some test sets weekly. Up to the 24th of June the return count is 45,000 with escapement into Great Central Lake at 21,000 and Sproat Lake at 24,000. The DFO had some troubles with their counters during the last week so there is thought that a few more than what was counted escaped. This “few more”could very well be quite a high number. The total Jack Sockeye escapement sits at approximately 2,500.
The Inlet continues to be closed to any sockeye fishing. With the return of only 150,000 expected there is not any bagging of Somass Sockeye on the coast. The Port Alberni Inlet however should have some wonderful fishing later in the summer as the numbers of Chinook and Coho returning are excellent and are forecast to be in a surplus. August and September are great months to fish the Port Alberni Inlet. We have fishing and accommodation packages. Many trips are now booked for the last few weeks of August and accommodation is becoming scarce so book your trip now.

Barkley Sound
All of our guides have had some unbelievable fishing down in Barkley Sound. Swale Rock, Meares, Austin and Cree, and offshore up to a mile from Austin, and Edward King over the past week have been extremely good. This is not to say that sometimes you have to pick up and leave and try another area only because your beginning point was not action packed. For example guide John who had fished Swale Rock on Thursday the 26th of June had some nice Chinook from 15 to 25 pounds found nothing at Swale on the Friday morning with guests from Saskatchewan. However the outside area of Meares towards Austin and Cree was fantastic. Guide Jon was into eight good sized salmon but was unfortunate to have three of them taken by a pesky seal. John was having great success on a four inch cop car coyote spoon and the five inch blue-nickel coyote. Guide Henry has also been using the five inch blue-nickel coyote spoon and picked up ten Chinook with guests on the 25th and 26th of June at Swale. Guide Wayne had a fantastic weekend fishing a mile off Austin. He also fished Meares and Edward King. Wayne had limits of Coho and Chinook for his four guests on Saturday June 28th fishing mainly Cree Island and up to a mile offshore. The fish were not hitting bait but again liked the four and five inch cop car and the army truck coyote spoon. Wayne also had a successful day at Edward King and Kirby on the 30th of June. With the wind blowing southeast the Cree-Austin fishing was difficult. The Kirby and Edward King area is protected so a decision for comfort sake was to fish that area. Wayne got into some nice Chinook for guests ranging 15 to 20 pounds. The cop car coyote again proved to be the best lure. Guides Doug and Gil on Monday June 30th fished Swale Rock. There was a lot of salmon in the area with most of the fish in the 8 to 15 pound range. Earlier in the week Doug had Chinook over 20 pounds. Gil had the largest fish of the day with his guests from Arizona with one just over 20. The water on Monday was very green. It seems that an algae bloom may be taking place in the Sound and offshore. Gil using a coyote spoon called the Kermit had some great success at 70 feet. Doug using a green spatterback hootchie and anchovy in the UV green Rhys Davis Teaser head found some good success at 90 feet with guests from Utah playing up to fifteen fish and landing six. Green seemed to be the best choice of color on the day. Barkley Sound should continue with some hot fishing. Coho are now coming into the mix. The salmon are coming into the Sound to rest and feed on bait as they make their migratory journey to the south. July looks like a very promising month. More salmon will swim the waters as commercial fishing to the north has been set back just over 50%. People coming to fish should try different colors but it seems that anchovy can prove the best results even though the coyote spoons mentioned above have been good. By the end of the month of July the fishing returning to Robertson Creek Hatchery in Port Alberni will begin to make their way into the Sound also. This will also make for great fishing opportunities.

Ucluelet
The fishing in Ucluelet continues to be good. Guide Mike fished a couple of the long weekend days with guests just at The Lighthouse and hit some good sized Chinook ranging from 15 to 25 pounds. Mike has been using the green spatterback needlefish in this area. Mike on Monday the 30th and the morning of July 1st fished Southbank where the Coho were thick in about thirty feet of water. Chinook seem to be sitting in the 80 to 100 foot level. Mike has also been fishing The Wreck for good sized lings up to fifteen pounds. He is also trolling the bottom with anchovy and salmon bellies for halibut which are smaller and only averaging up to fifteen pounds. The Big Bank currently seems to have the best Hali fishing. There also seems to be good numbers of salmon out at this area. The water has been excellent offshore. There have been some days where the water is flat like it often is in Barkley Sound. Sport Fishermen coming to fish offshore should remember that safety is of concern. A Good VHF radio and a good GPS are of importance. Always check updated weather conditions before heading too far out. If you do not have radar have a radar reflector which is not an expensive item and is important if the fog moves in. July, August, and September are fantastic months for fishing in the Ucluelet area.

Somass-Stamp River
There currently is not any sport fishing in the Somass or Stamp River. We are expecting the fall to be brilliant. Surplus Chinook and Coho are forecast. With a good number of Summer Steelhead in the mix the fishing in the upper and lower Stamp in October and November will be excellent. We have a very exciting fishing-accomodation package. September is completely gone as are the first six days of October.

Do not forget about the Port Alberni Labor Day Weekend Salmon Fishing Derby. This year promises to be very good. There is expected to be some great fishing and of course there is great entertainment at the grounds located on River Road. The weekend festivities begin on the Friday evening and continue until Labor Day Monday afternoon. Fishing begins on Saturday morning at 6am.

The Fog Ducker

well i'm back up to bamfield this weekend! But like fog-ducker said the inside is not even close to as hot as the reports make it out with most fishing being much closer to 10lbs then 20.

Anybody been out at 5 and 7 mile in the last couple of days? Any good numbers of halibut showing yet?

See ya out there!

Hey Poppa Swiss, spent Monday and Tuesday fishing up there and came back Weds. morning. SeaWolf and I caught three halibut at 12 mile on Berkley Gulp power baits, 10, 55 and 66 lbs. We caught 8 salmon at 7 mile, 7 springs from 16 to 10 lbs. average and one small clipped coho. SeaWolf was using a Baitrix on a green, red and silver flasher and I was using a 5" green and white glow Coyote on a green hot spot flasher. We tried Kirby and Edward King one morning, nada. SS
ps lots of whales made it very interesting :)

seaswirlstiper.jpg

sounds just like last weekend, tons of springs out from 3-7miles and spotty inside.

Sounds like we gotta go a little further out for consistant butts.

Went off shore Sun. 1/2 day for search of Hallies, Covered 7 mile well, did some at 5 mile.
Got squat, then went back in and got springs at Diplock.

Thanks Tubber , have a great trip ,Cheers , Fog Ducker ...

FISHING REPORT: PORT ALBERNI INLET, BARKLEY SOUND, UCLUELET
(WEST COAST) SOMASS-STAMP RIVER SYSTEM
July 16th 2008
Doug Lindores
Slivers Charters Salmon Sport Fishing

The salmon fishing in this area of Vancouver Island continues to be very good. The past week has seen some great weather but also some very strong outflow winds. There is some great salmon fishing still along the beach out of the Ucluelet Harbor. The reports out at the Big Bank are fantastic for Chinook and Halibut.
Those fishing in the Barkley Sound area of Vancouver Island have done well on the surfline with Chinook and Coho. The Coho are becoming a little more abundant.
There is not any sockeye fishing for any user group in the Port Alberni Inlet or Somass-Stamp River System. The DFO has forecast a run size of 150,000. This is a far cry from the returns that have been as high as 1.1 million and often averaged 800,000. The past weeks’ report has shown that 102,000 sockeye have passed through the Sproat and Great Central Lake counters. The river flow is from moderate to high with temperature of the water still favorable for the sockeye salmon. Water temperature in Sproat Lake is 19 degrees Celsius and the Great Central Lake temperature is 17 degrees Celsius. Sockeye that have Returned to Sproat Lake are 64,000 and 38,000 have reurned to Great Central Lake.

Port Alberni Inlet
The waters of the Port Alberni Inlet are very quiet. With sockeye salmon fishing not available many are anxiously awaiting the return of the Robertson Creek Chinook and Coho. Often the first Chinook appear in Barkley Sound by the end of July and by mid August are in good numbers in the Inlet. We are expecting a surplus of both Chinook and Coho. Returning Chinook to Robertson Creek are estimated to be about 55,000. With hatchery stock mixed with many local wild stream and creek returns there should be some fabulous fishing in the Inlet in August and September. If everything holds true of past years have those large and small red and pink hootchies ready. Often 42 inches of leader and a green or red glow hotspot flasher brings on great results. Call Doug to book your trip.

Barkley Sound
The salmon fishing in Barkley Sound has continued to be very good. It seems that the fish are in search of bait fish. Over the past week there have been phenomenal days at many favorite areas. Diplock, Alan Point, Meares and Kirby Point are all examples where the fishing has been good. Kirby was hot for guide John at the end of last week. Staying in tight to the point and using anchovy in a green glow anchovy holder with 6 feet of leader behind a green hotspot flasher the fishing was fast and furious up until 10:15 am and then shut right off. On Monday July 14th again guides Doug and John fished Kirby Point where there were plenty of fish in the teens. Guests from Hawaii with Doug and guests from Utah with John all had a fabulous day of fishing plus were entertained by whales. For Doug the green UV Rhys Davis Anchovy teaser head was working well as was the cop car coyote spoon. Both were behind a green hotspot glow flasher. John found the cop car very good and picked up a 20 pound Chinook which turned out to be the biggest fish of the two boats. For John the glow army truck hootchie was also working well. Some sport fishermen having been doing very well between Meares and Austin Island. One guide on Sunday landed a half dozen Chinook in their teens using a chartreuse and purple haze Rhys Davis Teaser Head. Guests from England were flattered with their catch but were a little annoyed with a couple of seals who have been hanging around the area and playing havoc with hooked salmon for weeks. The same great fishing can be said to be true during the past week at Diplock. Guide Paul made a stop there and had tremendous fishing before the fish decided to move out and things went dead. The Chinook were all in the teens and liked coyote spoons with the two favorites being a cop car and a lime green. We are expecting the good fishing to continue in Barkley Sound for the remainder of the summer. All areas over the past week have been fairly steady. Bait fish seem to be prominent in most areas. If the bait continues to pour into the Sound the salmon fishing will continue to be very hot.

Ucluelet (West Coast)
The fishing out of Ucluelet has been excellent. The Big Bank has been phenomenal as of late as has inside areas like Beg Island, the Lighthouse Bank, and the inner South Bank. Guide Mike has fished all of these areas over the past few days and has done very well. Mid-week saw some terrific outflow winds with most charters boats going into the protected waters of Barkley Sound. Guide Mike found a protected area behind Beg Island and proceeded to get a couple of early Chinook in the 10 to 12 pound range but later on in the morning during the tide change he hooked into a 16, 18, and 28 pound Chinook for some pretty excited guests from Edmonton. The Chinook around Beg were only interested in anchovy and were hitting the green Rhys Davis Teaser Head behind a green hotspot flasher. Over the weekend the fishing out at the Big Bank was very good. With great water and sunny conditions guests from Nanaimo were treated with limits in Chinook and Halibut. The Halis are sitting in 200 to 235 feet of water and for Mike were easily landed using a spreader bar with large herring and salmon stomachs. Most of the halibut catch saw fish coming in between 18 and 20 pounds which are just wonderful. The Chinook were sitting between 80 and 100 feet and were all 15 to 20 pounds. On the troll Mike found that plastic was out fishing bait and the fish were mostly interested in green colors. Two hootchies, the T Rex and the standby green spatterback with leader from 42 to 46 inches were really hot, behind a clear plaid or green flasher. We are getting into that time of year when the fishing around Ucluelet and in all offshore areas becomes very good. When out on the water and fishing for salmon try various colors of spoons and hootchies and always have bait only because some days that is the only answer. July is also the month when fog can be persistent especially in the morning hours. Safety on the water is of importance. Do not go out on the water if you do not have a good compass, GPS, radar reflector, a good VHF radio, and of course good lifejackets.

Stamp River
The Chinook and Coho fishing mixed with summer steelhead will be very good this fall. October and November continue to have some openings with us. This is a fantastic fishery aboard Jet boats with guides that are very knowledgeable of the river. We have the perfect package for accommodation and fishing.

Do not forge that this is the 37th year of the Port Alberni salmon festival. The Salmon Festival and Derby takes place during the Labor Day weekend and runs all three days. Great Prizes are in place for the winning fish each day. Support the local fishing and come down to Clutesi Haven Marina the Derby Headquarters located on River Road.

The Fog Ducker

Just got off the phone with my Dad who's been fishing Pill and Diplock for the last couple days - nothing.
Looks like the schools are moving around and it's a matter of finding the schools if you have the gas!

Got back from Ucluelet last week. Seems the big run hasen't come down yet. Weather was the worst I've seen in a long time. The wind never let up and the waves were hard to contend with. Charters all seem to go to Big Bank. We fished the western half of South Bank, worked the humps and did well. Got four kings first day out from 15 to 17lbs. Next day got 2 more about the same weight and called it quits since we still had the rest of the week. Couldn't jig for Hali's. Fished the Broken Islands because of the high winds and water condition. Caught another one and lost one to to big seal. Seal made fun of me by just staying out far enough with my nice king in his mouth and finally after a good war, he broke my line. Went our Friday for our last fish before heading home and caught our biggest king at 18lbs. I did fish Kirby and saw lots of bait but very little fish. South Bank showed little bait at the bottom but caught fish at the 110ft level. Tide change seems to work better that morning bite from what I've seen. We fished one hour before and after tide change. Green or red Hot Spot and Green & white hoochie with a mylard skirt scented with Anis oil. Hope the big slabs comes in for the rest of you guys going out. I'd give Southwest Corner a try if the waters calm.
