Sooke 2014 Fishing Reports

Today, my buddy and I went to Otter Point from 7 45 am till 1 pm. I forget to bring my two rod holders, too bad my buddy didn't do a check on our gear for me. We held the rods all the day. My buddy got 6 hits on his rod and lost 4. He kept a nice 8 - 9 lbs wild coho and undersized coho. He used a blue Tom Mack spoon. I had a pin pop two times and one was hit really hard . I missed striking it, on one shake I missed it. I had to hold the rod and control the motor . It was not easy for me. I saw one nice size about 10 lbs coho jumped out of water about 4- 5 feet in the air and another about 7 - 8 lbs coho jumped out water about 3 feet.. It was an amazing day and beautiful flat water. I used a TKO spoon, an Irish cream spoon, and anchovy. The blue mack spoon is a hottest ticket! 37' , 54, 85, 64' on downrigger. Between Otter point to second tide line. And there's lots of bait in the water.

In additional of your clarification on your post, we released two undersized salmon as well and kept only one legal fish. ;)

Well...sounds like a great day for everyone. Was out from 3-6 off Otter. 4 other boats at first and pretty soon had the place to myself on a perfect afternoon!

No "insane action" on the little yellow boat, no "doubleheaders" (hard with only one rod)...no five-minute limits...

But I did find my biggest coho to date, a 11.2# wild female in 375 ft off of Otter. 50 ft down on coho killer. She put up a noble fight with several great jumps, spinning on her tail on the water surface then making a huge fuss beside the yak showering everything.

PS. I too appreciated all the honest reports over the summer from English and others...kept me from being too discouraged as a beginner which I definitely would have felt had this only been a "Brag Board" and not a real "Fishing Reports" thread

Nice Fish C-J - us motor guys appreciate your reports as well, great to read what one can do from a 'yak!

My report for the day: Straight out of Beecher in 500+ feet of water from 10:30-2, got our limit on wild coho, but none over 9lbs, and couldn't find a hatch today. Only hits today for us were on anchovies - hardware wasn't working at all. Water was a little choppy in our area around 11, but flattened out nicely for the pm. We were really hoping to see a whale show, for the kids sake, but it wasn't meant to be.

Say, I thought that come October, the regs were supposed to change to allow more wild coho retention in Sooke, or a higher overall limit from the current 2. I don't see anything to that effect on the DFO site - am I mistaken?

Nope it never has increased in wild retention from just the one you could get after Oct 1.... Being how it opened early It wouldn't be surprising them not changing it...

If anything it will be like last year 1 wild three hatchery Oct 1 if changed. But rumor is regulations will stay the same in place as they are with one and one.... Wait and see..

Three of us out for the morning today off the Bluffs in 450 to 530 WC and the JDF is just full of Coho right now. Put our 3 clipped and 3 unclipped in the boat in short order. The largest was a little under 11lbs on the Marina scale and was clipped.

For us the most were up top under 50 feet and 30 and 40 feet caught us a lot but we did get one down around 90 feet. The small trip planner out the back was banging off a lot. Bait and an all white glow hootchie were fishing about the same with both getting a lot of hits. Not a lot of keeper crabs in the basin lately but we did manage two large keepers today.

Found my micro sd adapter so included the 13 lb Ho from last Tuesday our largest so far. Hope I can get the pictures to post. My buddy had the Go Pro attached last week on my boat and you can see the fish do circles until they pulled off the rigger or are helped off and a lot of other Ho’s racing around down there at high speed, a lot more than one would think are under you when you are on a school of them.

PS gonefishing - I also think that Englishman is a sportsman and posts honest reports and you comments were intended to support him. I know him well and have had him out on my boat a few times. You are right however, your generalized comment about others was a low blow in that it accuses some of not being honest in their reports but in effect dams everyone who posts report and you are not the first one to do so recently. I know many absolutely refuse to post reports at all including some who use to because they just don’t want to deal with that kind of comment or worse and I sometimes wonder if it is worth it myself. It takes guts to post and open yourself up to the critics. It is unfortunate because many who refuse to post reports are very good fishermen and their reports would be valuable.

Very nice fish CJ.

Nothing would surprize me at all from DFO. What is the logic in restricting us now on hatchery Coho. I fail to see how this does anything for conservation. The more hatchery caught the better unless DFO actually wants a large number of hatchery Coho returning to the rivers and competing with the wilds for the best spawning gravel. I also fail to see how having it 1 and 1 rewards anglers for all the fund raising for habitat restoration and salmon enhancment and all the volunteer work that angers do in running many of the Coho hatcheries and restoring habitat. Anglers have sacrificed for a long time and contributed a great deal to the very successful return of Coho in large numbers. It should be 1 and 3 right now but certainly after Oct 1st.

Lots of action on a beauty day as many others have posted...

Off the head way out we too found chivies to be far more productive and had some bait to cull in any event so went with that producing many hits.

No double headers, but lots of action from 100-80-prop wash.

Could not find anything all day over 6 pounds but happy to get our limit on a great fishing day!

Boat is pulled. Happy fishing.

It wasnt a low blow ....It was tongue and cheek,
Im sorry if it offended but sometimes its not a fair assessment what he says myself and MANY others are getting fish all the time and RIGHT beside him yet he posts it sucks.....thats just not a fair assessment.....a report is for what you have done and for what you have SEEN around you like myself and MANY others do on here.

Most of the time its all negativity which does not help or promote the great fishing we have in sooke. if some one like Walleyes can come all the way from alberta and fish for a week after missing a few years here and get MANY fish because he has figured out how to fish sooke.

If one person on a team has a bad game but the rest of the team plays great and wins does that team suck???
its easy when you pay attention to the little things .
fishing in sooke IS great and ill always maintain that especially right now ...

That is good news. One needs to be carful and always check the regs themselves rather than rely on blogs and answers to requests on the VHF. It is surprising how often people ask what the regs are for a certain situation on VHF 68 and get an incorrect answer. That said I believe that Ling and Rockfish retention close in Area 20 on Oct. 1st so hopefully most will check the regs. and confirm that.

It has been 1-3 after Oct 1st for some time now. The local Victoria SFAC asked for a relaxing of wild Coho retention in September and we originally asked for 1 wild starting on Sept 15h. The DfO reps at that meeting told us that DfO managers prefer starting or ending regulation variations at the beginning or end of the month not the middle. So we happily asked for September 1st.

I have the greatest respect for "Englishman"
He catches his fish when he is in the right spot at the right time.
He gives HONEST reports for his good and BAD days and is a true sportsman and gentleman at all times.
Unlike some on this site...not you Roy, but that was a low blow.
Keep fishin Englishman and keep your reports coming!
This site and fishing in general needs more like you!
Thank you “goenfishin”. Much appreciated. I will continue to put my posts up. Good or not so good, although some on here are very sensitive to the latter, since they think I am “dissing” Sooke. Not at all. Just being honest that is all. It is clear to anyone who reads posts regularly on here that the guides are FAR more successful than the average guy – as they should be. I hope from my very average posts it is clear that it is not that easy for summer Chinook (especially this year!) and that folks take heart from guys who report a skunking, should they be experiencing them too.

Not sure where you are getting that from Wolf. If I see people catching all around me I say so. My report of last Tuesday seems to have ignited a firestorm and got you all riled up. Yet several folks came on afterwards and posted similar experiences. Last week WAS hit and miss for coho. You either found them or you did not. This week looks entirely different. I have not been out again yet, but you know better than I do Wolf that a week is along tome in fishing in Sooke and things can change dramatically even daily. So you cannot compare my (and the other guys!) reports from last week to what is happening now

Most of the time its all negativity which does not help or promote the great fishing we have in sooke. if some one like Walleyes can come all the way from alberta and fish for a week after missing a few years here and get MANY fish because he has figured out how to fish sooke.
Like you say he came for a week and fished every day. He did very well but he DID NOT limit out every day. He is obviously a good angler and much better that me. This year I did get a 22, a 21 and four 19’s plus some smaller ones. The difference is I only get one good one a day, not 6-10 like you guides do. And that is as it should be! If you guys did not know a thing or two there would be no point in hiring guides!! Industrial strength skill is what you bring. I am just out there for fun and you will have to get used to the fact that I don’t post huge successes every time out. The BIG irony is I got 5 fish on the day of the Consultant’s Derby with two girls on board who had never fished before. I was the 3[SUP]rd[/SUP] best boat out of 40 with three fish weighed! So when I am in the right place it can even happen for me. (Where was your boat that day? LOL)

I am sorry, if in your (not very) humble opinion, I suck. I do the best I can and give honest reports. I know from other posts on here, PMs, and personal interactions on the dock my experiences happen to others too. That’s fishing, and if you go only once a week there are going to be some good times and not so good times.

come on Roy...I appreciate your honest posts, but this is not a promo site for guides looking to promote their business (well actually it is).
Lots of guys had a poor year for springs off Sooke this year, mainly because they were not fishing the right places at the right times. But most will agree it was a poor year in general for Springs for 90% of the fishermen most of the time.
Posts from fishermen who had no luck are just as important as those who were successful and often very vague about where they were catching them.
That's how I see it.
Back to reports, from our experience lately...
Off the Race to Sheringham, 1st or second tide line...doesn't seem to matter. 60 to 120' can't miss and should continue for another couple of weeks with coho getting larger. Bait best, but hootchies, flies (flashtails if you have any) behind a flasher with no more than 40" leads.
Hali fishing is very good right now as well.
That's my report.

Report from yesterday...
Caught some coho, caught some rays and caught a bit of a buzz. LOL!
Can't beat weather like that at this time of year.
Saw some humpback whales also.
Good times!

Lots of wilds and only one hatchery. Seemed to hit lots of different gear when you were on them.
Many double headers. Found fish right in the tide lines mostly.

This lure has done well this summer (without barb) but not this time!

Really nice to see nets out and everyone having a blast in the sun out there lately!

Had an absolute blast with my boy and his buddy. His first time out fishing, and I think it's something he'll definately remember. I was just the 'set the hook guy' because neither can pull the rod out of the holder.. Hoping the weather is decent, I have a couple of 8 yr olds to come with my boy and I this Saturday....
Here is a great pic from this past Saturday....some of you may have been out there and heard these 2 cheering and whooping each otherimage.jpg....
