Podding a SeaSport 22

I see that as a major accident waiting to happen. I never steer facing backwards and I’m sure no one fishing with me will remember the steering is backwards. This will cause an accident in tight waters. Fundamentally, it’s not what I asked for nor discussed several times with the installer. If they couldn’t install it correctly, they should have told me before I spent thousands $$ installing a new hydraulic system to connect the main to the kicker! Throughout this podding process, I’ve been astounded how many things the expensive “professionals” screwed up and have been defensive instead of apologizing and fixing it!
Very frustrating. I know exactly how you feel.

I also gave it more thought and realized it was while watching a Tuna show where they regularly backed down on the fish. It was in that case where it kind of made sense.

Sorry, I realize this isn't helping the situation whatsoever.
 
Could you move steering wheel up top your transom. Ditch that big wheel get a smaller one. In my boat I put the controls/steering in center. Allows me to go on either side of it, and control throttle. Facing forward or facing back.

You already have the hoses right there its just a matter of relocating. Then when you fish you face forward when you use it.

Sounds like its more of mounting location issue in your case.

Lol just logged on to suggest the same thing. I think this is the only option to obtain what the OP is looking for. As you say get a smaller wheel. Also this way the unit can be turned around as to line up with the steering direction.

I’ve ran them both ways from the stern, you’d be amazed how many will turn it the wrong way the first few times regardless of which way it’s set up. Either way works, and it doesn’t take long to get used to.
 
Been fishing this way for years... no problem here :)

I think you’re thinking of this backwards. Main wheel is as follows. Turn clockwise. go starboard. Turn counterclockwise, go port. When you add in the rear steer, the wheel is now mirrored to the front but the same principle still applies. If you switch a hose, all your doing is changing the flow of the fluid. Being It’s a closed loop hydraulic system, you can’t have one wheel setup to go starboard/clockwise and the other starboard/counterclockwise as you end up with one being the opposite of the other. If you stand at the back and face forwards, the only thing you should remember is clockwise goes starboard.
 
How about if a guy were to just rotate that whole assembly as it is 180 degrees. Would that not fix it. Leave the hoses as they are hopefully they are long enough. I can’t help but think this would fix it. Those of us with rear helm stations the steering is the same as the front so why can’t this one be. It’s just that they have taken the top or front of the steering system and they have it pointing up. Take the front or top of it and rotate it so it faces the floor. This should make it correct.
 
Nope that won’t do it either, the only way is to put that wheel up top.

Yep I agree wolf.. I’ve been amazed how many things the trades did wrong considering I went with some of the most reputable builders in town, had no budget restrictions and it took 6.5 months! I still have to send the boat to another mechanic to fix the steering and install my dash gauges correctly! On a better note, we loaded up the family plus 3 days camping gear and food and spent the weekend on the gulf islands. At 30knots (4000rpm) we were burning approx 11 gal per hour. We went from Victoria to active pass to chemainus to saltspring island and back to Vic and burned approx 60gal (half tank). Way more power than the 5.7 inboard, way easier to get on plane, no bow porpoise at low speeds. Overall huge performance and handling improvements and it seems like better fuel economy.

You have a beautiful boat and I hope you work all your kinks out sooner than later. Definitely will catch my attention if I see you on the water! Thanks for posting your experience.

Thanks sttr… I think everyone is reading your thread and it’s incredible! I did loose sleep when I saw your first pod lol. Excellent attention to detail and craftsmanship sir

We will see…
I know where I went wrong with not enough attention to detail and I know where others went wrong in the design of the pod. We will see if I make the same mistakes agains LoL
