West Coast Salmon Vulnerable to Climate Change, but Some Show Resilience to Shifting Environment

I think I'll listen to the numerous dozens of scientists and hundreds of researchers associated w the PSF and those numerous University and government projects that feed into the PSF over a blog maintained by yet another denier that earns a living off of publishing denier books and whose background is in Civil Engineering rather than fisheries & climate science.

For me it is far worse than a bizarre farce to pretend to equate that denier bloggers are somehow the trustworthy science equivalent of the many thousands of scientists and peer-reviewed articles on climate change and global warming instead available out there - it is highly irresponsible and highly damaging to deny the undeniable reality out there in order to stall responses and adaptive strategies because the oil and gas lobby is afraid of loosing market share.

What we can logistically & realistically do to mitigate these very real and increasing effects is where the debate is. The rest of the informed & experienced general public - esp. those living with these effects like up North have moved past that narrative like 20 years ago or so. Only in the denier camp do they still question climate changes causes and effects. I guess it feels safer to deny these effects - esp. if one is getting paid to do so.

Analysis / Bias

In review, NoTricksZone publishes news and studies that attempt to discredit the consensus of climate scientists that global warming is significantly influenced by humans. Mr. Gosselin does not completely disregard human’s impact on climate change but states the influence is minimal.

NoTricksZone often publishes stories with emotional wording to influence the reader. For example, they often use the term “alarmist” to describe those who support the consensus of science such as this: Alarmist Scientist “Way Off Target” …Arctic Sea Ice/European Winter Claim Refuted By Newly Published Study. They also attempt to personally discredit people based on character traits such as this: Expert Psychiatrist: Greta Being “Misused For Interests” …Parents’ Promotion Of Troubled Child “Ethically Problematic”.

When it comes to climate science, they often publish alternative theories for global warming such as sunspots. They also offer a blogroll that consists of other climate skeptics such as the Climate Depot, Judith Curry, and Climate Dispatch. In general, NoTricksZone is a human-influenced climate change denial pseudoscience website.

Thanks Ukee - I went to a talk about 18 years ago now given by one of the well respected fisheries scientists - Groot - whom attended Kyoto (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Kyoto_Protocol) along with hundreds of other scientists from all over the globe. As depressing as the talk was - the scientists @ that time already predicted the effects we are seeing now: increases in fires and intensities of systems/storms, changes in waterfall amounts and timing, species range shifts (esp. salmon) and the Boreal forest being cut in two by a combination of fires and pests (pine beetles, etc.).

All caused largely by human-induced changes - the largest of which is our appetite for hydrocarbons, and the subsequent increases over time of the greenhouse gasses - esp. CO2. I have also spent some time in the Northern communities and "up North". Many of my friends and researchers are still at it noting the increases in the scale and timing of those impacts over these last few years.

And here we are 18 years later seeing this all now in play - while a urban engineer in highly modified Europe (not up North) who gets paid by the denier lobby to write denier psalm books - is given (by the denier believers) as much or more credibility as the many hundreds of scientists and peer-reviewed journals available out there - as a valid counterpoint for them to disbelieve & thereby stall responses to the changes reported on in the numerous, credible, vetted, articles and data out there.

I think that is loosely called "religion" when ones "believes" irrespective of any available evidence to the contrary - "indoctrinated" when one believes despite available evidence to the contrary - "predatory" when PR firms and lobbyists prey on people's ignorance - and "corruption" when greed and money supplants and interferes with our governance mechanisms. The unholy trilogy, indeed - a repeating pattern in human civilization and that inevitable demise. There is a real and experienced reason why church and state should be separated; and why it is but responsible to act and provide leadership and management to societal risks.

And for me the most unfortunate and unfair prologue to this current political reality is that the people involved in this extensive PR industry that supports and protects big gas and oil and coal interests will escape accountability for their lies since these climate change/global warming effects are not just multigenerational - but will likely last for a thousand years or more.

Yet it will be our kids, their kids, and 50+ generations of humans in the future that will be living with these effects and looking back over our period of history and saying "Why were they so stupid and so irresponsible? Didn't anyone see that coming?". Pointing fingers then will do no good to mitigate these only increasing effects.

This is what our fishery scientists should be preparing for, If we are currently at a 1% increase and salmon are doing this bad in the lower 48 what does salmon look like at a 4% increase.

"As a professor of climate and space sciences, I teach my students they need to plan for a world 4℃ warmer"

Withdrawal of Canada[edit]

Main article: Kyoto Protocol and government action § Withdrawal of Canada
See also: Canada and the Kyoto Protocol
In 2011, Canada, Japan and Russia stated that they would not take on further Kyoto targets.[108] The Canadian government announced its withdrawal—possible at any time three years after ratification—from the Kyoto Protocol on 12 December 2011, effective 15 December 2012.[109] Canada was committed to cutting its greenhouse emissions to 6% below 1990 levels by 2012, but in 2009 emissions were 17% higher than in 1990. The Harper government prioritized oil sands development in Alberta, and deprioritized the reduction of greenhouse emissions. Environment minister Peter Kent cited Canada's liability to "enormous financial penalties" under the treaty unless it withdrew.[108][110] He also suggested that the recently signed Durban agreement may provide an alternative way forward.[111] The Harper government claimed it would find a "Made in Canada" solution. Canada's decision received a generally negative response from representatives of other ratifying countries.[111]

You know, the really sad part of all this is the hundreds of $$ millions spent by all levels of government to cushion the impacts of covid -19 yet they have no serious plans on what to do or how to reduce green house gases, or plastic pollution ..The best I have seen from the feds is something called the blue economy .. but it's only a lot of talk which fools people into thinking they are doing something .. These really are sad times, with lots of talk but no real idea from leadership as to what to do .. It's a crime that they accept a paycheck

Population control,

what’s the sence on having industry get cleaner and cleaner but at the same time increasing demand.

IMO industry is dong not a bad job
Some of the dinosaurs that still digging their heels in but I find now everyone is trying harder with sustainable solutions and zero waste councils.

I know people will counter that the global population growth is slowing but places like the lower mainland are expected to double in population in the near future.

everyone wants the supply side to change because having lower consumer demand is looked at as end of time’s.

also weather changes and global increase is all baked into the cake. What we are seing today is a result of GHGs put into the autmosphear 50 years ago.

They have similar problemslikeour DFO only for them its the Freshwater regulators.
The number of fish that returned to the Klamath Basin, although slightly better than forecast, was still not enough to plot a 2021 commercial fishery free of concern. Commercial fishing in the Fort Bragg zone, stretching from Pt. Arena to just north of Shelter Cove in southern Humboldt County, will likely be limited in 2021.

“If water managers would leave more water in the rivers during some of the drier years, we’d always have more salmon,” said GSSA director and co-owner of Reel Magic Sportfishing Mike Aughney.

Since baby salmon are considered one year old when they leave the Central Valley in the spring, and most return as three year old adults, you can usually count on good fishing two years after lots of rain and snow. Although there was decent rain and runoff in 2019, this year’s forecast is poor, in part because of the severe decline of salmon in the last drought.

“Drought could revisit us almost anytime, including this year. We need to build and fortify in the good years so we don’t get wiped out again in the bad,” said GSSA secretary Dick Pool.

“That’s why GSSA is working overtime to get salmon recovery, habitat improvements, and hatchery improvements on the state’s radar.”

About GSSA: The Golden State Salmon Association (www.goldenstatesalmon.org) is a coalition of salmon advocates that includes commercial and recreational salmon fishermen and women, businesses, restaurants, a native tribe, environmentalists, elected officials, families and communities that rely on salmon. GSSA’s mission is to restore California salmon for their economic, recreational, commercial, environmental, cultural and health values.

Currently, California’s salmon industry is valued at $1.4 billion in economic activity and 23,000 jobs annually in a normal season and about half that much in economic activity and jobs again in Oregon. Industry workers benefiting from Central Valley salmon stretch from Santa Barbara to northern Oregon. This includes commercial fishermen and women, recreational fishermen and women (fresh and salt water), fish processors, marinas, coastal communities, equipment manufacturers, the hotel and food industry, tribes, and others.

To bad we can’t get together like the GSSA and get the DFO swamp to stop catering to other interests.
