I have 2) Lowrance HDS8’s Gen 2 at the main helm. Thinking to update to HDS9 Live to replace sonar and an iPad to replace plotter. I see many using pads or laptops for their plotter but I’ve been told that anything other than a head unit will not be accurate for navigation. Not that I heard that from a rep…
Any thoughts or recommended options?

Accuracy seemed fine on my tablet, however I found it was hard to see in full sunlight.

Don’t use the tablet for your primary nav. With the glass screen you get reflections and can’t see in sunlight.
Great for planning and use as a secondary.
I’d just sell your gen 2’s and get new 9” screens or a 12” and a 9”.

Sorry missed your message. I still haven’t made the purchase to replace 8’s but thinking this week new unit price going up Sept 1 apparently. As far as a price for an 8 I’m not sure. What are your thoughts?

Add a hds9 and run a cable to your 8. If not you might have to replace you map chip. I would not use a tablet again, battery and gps issues make it a point of failure compared to a wired unit.
