Sorry the links don't work.

Transport Canada has changed the definition of sheltered waters.

Boats that operate only on Sheltered Waters may be subject to reduced safety requirements because Sheltered Waters are lower risk.

Transport Canada has recently extended the definition of Sheltered Waters to:

A lake, or a river above tidal waters where a boat can never be more than 2.5 nautical miles from shore
(it used to be limited to 1 nautical mile from shore)

Certain other specific named areas are also considered to be Sheltered Waters, these named Sheltered Waters include protected areas within many of our local harbours such Nanaimo, Prince Rupert and Comox and protected areas within Clayoquot and Nootka sounds. Click here and here for a full list of specific named Sheltered Waters.

What does this mean for training requirements?

If you are operating a small commercial boat, which is less than 8m in length and carrying up to 6 passengers, in only Sheltered Waters, you only need a PCOC card (you do NOT need the SVOP and MEDA3). If you are using a marine radio you will still need the ROCM (or equivalent) and you will still need MBFA (or equivalent).

As always, this is my best interpretation of the regulations! More information about these changes is available here. Please check with Transport Canada for the final word.

Please check out our website for our Fall SVOP, MEDA3 and ROCM marine training schedule.
