Stop the herring fishing

The following email was sent to me. Please, respond if you feel the need.
Folks:

Please excuse my bothering you for a favour. But, there's been a lot of street talk locally the past several years about the wisdom of continuing the commercial herring fishing in the Strait of Georgia. The herring stocks are on a rapid decline, and may soon be gone! Along with every creature in the food chain above them! Sadly, the herring fishing continues …

The Parksville Qualicum Beach News (our local newspaper) on Friday, March 7, ran a story about the drop in numbers of herring, and this prompted a very well-written letter by a Parksville man, Brian Klobchar, about the "folly" of continuing the fishery. In addition, the PQB News posed the following simple opinion poll: "Should the commercial herring fishing be immediately curtailed?" Ordinarily I'd follow the advice of Richard Daly (former mayor of Chicago): "Vote early, and vote often!" Unfortunately, the electronic poll only accepts one vote per voter (an intriguing concept in many locales!).

So, I'm asking you to help me "stuff the ballot box" in a perfectly legitimate way. Just click on this link <http://www.bclocalnews.com/vancouver_island_central/parksville_qualicumbeachnews/opinion/>, and cast your vote on the Weekly Poll. Hopefully, you'll add your "YES" vote.

Millions of little herring, and all of their predators, are dependent on your vote!

Many thanks for allowing my intrusion,

Warren Bailey

This is the toughest fishing the gillnetters have faced, small fish and not enough of em, its been open for weeks! How does the DFO on the local news say all the herring stocks are healthy and near normal? Why is DFO not posting total gross tonnnage observed in Georgia Strait? as they have done every notice up until this year? DFO is doing this in the Prince Rupert area but not in Georgia Strait. I suspect as others here do on this forumn the stock is down, and we are kept in the dark.

Done. For what its worth. DFO is intent on killing every last fish in the ocean. The manpower, airplanes, etc, tracking down the last few fish remaining. It makes me sick!!

I present the "Herring Industry Advisory Board"

Membership Terms of Reference Minutes of Meetings

Mandate

The mandate of the Herring Industry Advisory Board (HIAB) is to:
