Sooke 2013 Fishing Reports

I've been guiding the Sooke area for 27 years and started fishing here back in the mid 60's. My largest Sooke spring went 52 pounds and was taken July 4th, 2001. The last week of June and first week of July are prime for big springs.

This year, those big ones will have to be released unless they are hatchery...:(

Mikeyman, a couple guides I would recommend would be wolf, tailspin, or give Trevor a call from
No bananas. All three would be an excellent time and put u on some fish.

Scott, I burn the fuel everyday and make the run to Sheringham to get outside the restricted area. Others don't.

I will side with r.s on his carbon freindly fishing tactics ;)

So anyone done the math? How many lbs would an average 85cm Chinook be?

First day of the season out on my boat (launched, tuned everything in and moored it 2 wks ago)! Great day to be on the water, dead clam. Started at 8:30 and fished across the the bluffs, with spoons and hotchies in 120-150' of water, no bait seen and no fish. Carried on to the trailer park, switched the hootchie to a bloody nose and anchoive with a UV/purple like flasher. Started to see bait and with in about 20mins had a great hit. In about 100', with downrigger at 90'. Ran line out several times, then busted the leader! The fish definately had shoulders and nice to feel a decent spring on the line again. Made a few tracks back and forth between Otter and Trailer Park, still saw a few decent bait balls on the sonar, but no more fish. Last tac carried on past Otter to second rock, a few small bait balls, but no fish. Called it a day at 12 and headed home. There was a half dozen boats around the same areas and didn't see anyone else hook up. Great to be out again and looking forward to the rest of the season!!!

There is a size restriction unless hatchery? What are the details in regards to the reg change?

Until June 15th they have to be less than 10 lbs, approximately

I hope the Vancouver based commercial crabbers get their gear out of the prime fishing tacks soon. I couldn't believe where some of this gear was placed. The local commercial guys would never do this as they know it is better to respect one another's fishery. Last time out the floats were from 3rd rock all the way up to the little ledge just east of the mouth of Muir (off the big house) and all along the 90-120 foot depth.

Fished a long one today 7-4 Hit 5 fish released two and lost a couple. Lost a beauty about 30 ft behind the boat fought it for 15 mins and it jumped 4 times. Was high 20's from best I could tell.

All fish up high on all kinds of gear. Hootchies coho killer and spoons. No bait ;)

With a flasher. Thinking it was a big part of why I lost this particular fish. As we all know how it goes when they start jumping.

Ive never had a fish that size jump so many times. Very exciting. And with the thought of a release in my mind. Not to worried I lost it either!

-Cheers!

If you have a trap in the harbour, you might want to check on them. It was a day with big tides and lotsa weeds. Thanks for a heads up from a buddy, I got mine before it went for Japan.
