Running to Port Hardy

I'm thinking of running my boat up to Port Hardy from the Vancouver area for a few days of fishing this summer. Would like to get some advice whether this is something that can be done in one day?, how far is it?, do I have to worry (ie - what time do they generally blow up) about the daily strong winds that kick up in Johnstone Strait in the summer? I have a 28 foot boat that cruises around 30 knots.

Any other advice would be appreciated.

Thanks

Usually blows up around 2pm. I wouldn't count on doing it in one day...it's quite the ways. Plus...you'd have to stop and do some fishing along the way...no one can resist that much temptation ;)

You can do it in a day... easy...weather permiting.
Leave early from Vancouver, fuel in Campbell than make the rest of the run...
It can get nasty through Kelsey Bay even in the summer months so make sure you check your weather...
I've done it a ton over the years and it never gets boring.
I can tell you this though, Hardy is one thing but if your coming all this way...keep going and you'll end up fishing some incredible country...
You can homestead in Lower Rivers and even up near Bella Bella/Shearwater...
It's an awesome vacation and once you've hit Hardy...it's really not that much further....

I have an old copy, of Pacific Yachting-boating in BC magazine (Dec 06), and there is an article by the CCG officer Kevin Monahan. He has written many books including "Local Knowledge: A skippers reference". The detail he describes on "how to safely navigate lower johnstone strait" is amazing, to me anyways. His focus in the magazine article is how to transit Seymour narrows to alert bay or vs. in a day. He gives the scenarios of leaving Campbell river in the morning and experiencing, 1. High water slack or 2. Low water slack. Then he goes on to describe what to do if you're heading south/east and how to end up at seymour narrows at an afternoon or evening slack. The book would be a $20 well spent.

what about running north of Hardy, through Queen charolette strait and maybe through slingsby channel and through Nequacto rapids. I remember going that route on a tug boat I worked on years ago, the opening to slingsby channel always looked real fishy. Id love to try it someday. I wonder how long it would take? Anyone done it?

you might consider picking up a copy of the 'waggoneer cruising guide'. there are in depth descriptions regarding all of the water you have mentioned along with suggestions for safe passage.
