Reading charts for halibut

Hi guys, I have often heard that you should check your charts and look for specific types of bottom for halibut. I have the standard paper charts. I can't see how you tell what the bottom is from those charts. I can tell depth and contour but not whether it is gravel or whatever. What am I missing? Thanks

If you look at the Canadian CHS charts they have small letters in italics that denote what the bottom is like in some areas of the chart (e.g. G = gravel, S = Sand, R = Rocky, etc.) look at the CHS chart guide (i.e. Chart # 1) that list all the symbols and notations used on the charts for more info.

Here is the link: http://www.charts.gc.ca/publications/chart1-carte1/index-eng.asp

Generally halibut prefer rocky and gravelly areas over sandy ones.
