NFLD cod fishing

I apologize in advance for posting an east coast fishing report but here goes.
Just got back from a quick family trip to the Rock. Managed to get out for a day of the recreational cod fishery, chose a good day (the only day the wind wasn’t blowing). Wanted to show the kids a good time and hopefully catch a few fish. We were prepared to work for them, but 2 boats had their limits (15 per boat) within 40 minutes. The bottom was just crawling with cod. Definitely brought back memories from my youth and hopefully created some memories for my kids

Grew up there myself. What part of the province did you do the fishing? Were the boats some type of charter or private friends/family?

Not far out of Eastport, Salvage to be exact. Friends and family. I was going to bring back some salt cod, but was concerned about airlines losing luggage on way home

Wife and I have been here going on 3wks now, Twillingate to be exact.
Fished last weekend in the food fishery also, good fun and lots of fish.
Then we headed down to inlaws old stomping grounds of Salvage and Greenspond for 5 days.
Beautiful country..already planning our trip back for next yr.

Between the yellow house and White House in your picture of Salvage is where we launched the boat for our cod fishing day

Do the squid come into the Twillingate area. I know they used to show up around Lewisporte when we lived there. Great pics. Hoping for a trip that way next summer.

Looks like fun! How deep are the fish usually? It looks like they were hitting buzz bombs?
Cool pics and info! thanks for sharing

We were catching them between 150-200 feet. Yeah, I think they were buzz bombs or at least a Newfie version. I had brought some mudrakers to try if the fishing was slow but never had the chance to try them before we had limit.

Fun! Glad there is a rec fishery, reminds me of Robert Munshe fishing books for kids.

I’m headed east tomorrow to Gaspe and Nova Scotia, wonder if any fishing is open there?
