JRC 1500 setup

Recently got me self a JRC 1500 but didn't get around to setting it up.
A few of you gents had recommended the JRC 1500 and I'm wondering if there's any tricks to setting it up or is it as simple as just following the recommendations off the manual?
Tried it out a couple of times and don't seem to be able to see anything. Hope its not busted!!
Suggestions appreciated.

When I hooked mine up, I got blips right away. Did the alignment thing with a bouy in the harbour and away I went.
