Fishery Notice - Fisheries and Oceans Canada

Subject: FN0585-General Information - Chinook - In-season Abundance Update - Fraser River Spring 5(2) and Summer 5(2) Chinook

This notice is intended to provide an update on the in-season abundance of Fraser River Spring 5(2) and Summer 5(2) Chinook.

In 2021, the Albion Chinook test fishery began operating on April 18. The total catch in the 8 inch mesh test net for the period of this update (May 2 to June 12, or stat weeks 05/1 to 06/2) was two (2) Chinook, which is converted to a cumulative weekly catch-per-unit-effort (CPUE) of 0.04. Based on this input, the predicted terminal return for the Fraser River Spring 5(2) and Summer 5(2) Chinook aggregate ranges from 16,000 to 43,000 Chinook (median value of 26,550).

The cumulative daily CPUE at Albion during the period of this update (cumulative daily CPUE = 0.31), is well below the historical average (CPUE = 26.2) and is one of the lowest on record for this time period (2020 was the lowest). This is also one of the lowest run size estimates produced by the model since its inception in 2012. It is important to note that input values that are outside of the historical range of observations, like that observed for 2021, typically result in higher uncertainty in the run size estimate produced by the model. The low catch at the test fishery suggests very low abundance for the Spring 5(2) and Summer 5(2) Chinook Salmon returning in 2021, and indicates on-going low productivity for these Management Units.

The in-season run size estimate is provided for information purposes only and is not being used for in-season adjustments. The Department has announced precautionary management actions to substantially reduce fishery mortalities on these at-risk Chinook. Further information on these management measures can be found in 2020 Fishery Notices FN1398 and FN1360, and 2021 Fishery Notices FN0172, FN0370, FN0467, and FN0481.

Skeena sockeye test looks like its actually off to an okay start compared to recent years for sockeye 70k est escapement past the tyee test as of July 5th
