I seen a bunch of people catching herring at french creek marina and was wondering if anyone has ever tried catching pilchards with a herring rig or anything.

Yes, we caught a bunch around the cleaning tables in Winter Harbour.

Two years ago on the last day of my Nootka trip, I got my salmon at Burdwood and then tried to troll slowly for halibut a little farther out. When the downrigger rod started jiggling in the bait school, I would chuck over the herring jig with a 4 ounce weight on the bottom and troll it. No halibut, but I got a couple dozen pilchards in no time.

We did as Tubber described last year. We caught a few to see if we could use them for bait. The ones we caught were like 10-11 inches long.
I tried various methods of rigging them whole - but I never got them spinning quite right - I think cause I didn't have hooks big enough.
Any suggestions on how to fish these big pilchards? Whole? Or do you cut plug them (which I didn't try).

I see in the next thread regarding pilchards/sardines that they work great cut plug. I'll give that a try next time around..
