8 hali for 6 hours of fishing is not bad!Thats just about as good as the wreck at Ukee!

I saw some halibut avid anglers bringin' nice halibut at the derby headquarters...It was my first time to see so massive halibut on the scale over 100 pounds. holy smokes! must be tough to reel this monster halibut in.

Nice fish but hard to see all those big females being removed from local waters. I must be getting soft in my old age.

Someone always has to come out with the "big female fish" comment.

It was a derby with the prize going to biggest fish not biggest male fish.

I am all for concervation but this is not the thread to bring this up.

Congrats on the big flatties!!

Your absolutely right tips. The hay day's of the canneries was not the time to bring up conservation either as it was all about profits. Good logic.

Very true tips BUT we are all guilty now you look at that 4 big females in the derby and another big one caught yesterday by benny so 5 in total that will lay approx 3 million eggs per fish so there goes 15.000.000 halibut im sorry to say but little victoria will in less than ten years be whiped out the way its going it cant sustane that much pressure,we seriously have to look at the way alaska and the charlottes are starting to do cut loose the over 100lb fish.

And PLEASE dont bother sending me hate mail I know i am just as quilty of it and would love to see a 1 hali per person quota for here I dont go in that derby for this reason my buddy talked me into it last year after about 6 years of not going in it and we all agreed not to ever again.

Wolf

My rant for the day

P.S I will say kudos for the guys that did go and the winners

Good analogy Wolf. A few years back I was fishing in Craig Alaska with some customers and hooked a hali that was at least 250 lbs. Guide was jumping with joy as it was the biggest fish the lodge had hooked that season and he would have won a big pool of money (the guides have a pool every season for biggest landed). Unfortunatly for him I released the fish to breed another day. I had no interest in killing a fish that big. Manager of the lodge was shocked but happy I had done so.
I realize this was a derby for the biggest fish. I also congratulated the winners, that takes skill. However I was just pointing out that those egg layers are our grandkids fish fry's. Just my two cents.
