Hey, Chero, sure you don't want to keep your Garmin for a back up. If your Lowrance GPS stops temporarily working (and they can) it nice to have a back up. I've been in this situatuion several times. Something to think about.

A vets smart idea indeed. I recently installed a Raymarine networked system and moved my feature short Garmin to the rear of my boat. I might one day invest in a handheld GPS as a further backup. I have a Navionics map on my smart phone but no cell in Rene and basically USA off Sooke so that is out.

I think you would need a satelite phone, not a cell phone to do that.

Try using navionics on your smart phone at Renfrew. No cell. Off Sooke only AT&T from USA @ about $1.00 per minute.

I have not had any issues with using my Navionics out of renfrew. Never get charged roaming.
