Fishing Closures

Heard a theory the other day that when we send in tagged fish heads, this information can also be used to decide on closing of certain fishing areas.
Since the commercial boats do not send in heads the sportsfishers are the only ones supplying information.
Use an example of say Kittys Beach if most of the heads sent in turned out to be from an endangered run even though there may not be very many and not from any other run the information on where they are caught is recorded. DFO can close that area to protect that run. However commercial fleet could have fished a couple of miles above kittys beach and decimated that run, but no information is recorded as to where those fish came from.

Sounds like bunk to me, it isn't just info from heads that used to decide fisheries closures.

Hey have a look at the daily notices on the dfo. page, scan down to some of the trolling announcements and you will see all heads, coho and chinook are retained on freezer trollers and must be submitted for sampling.
