Don't know much about them but I came across this guy last weekend at Indian Point on Savary Island. One of the locals was concerned as he looked very weak and called Vancouver Aquarium and they said he is probably molting and they can molt for up to 5 days. He was around for about 3 days then gone so all must be good.

There was one molting on a beach in West Van a few months ago.

Another one sittin on flora island off hornby last night. Looked to be even bigger than this guy. Dad said same thing... Molting. We were 30 ft away before we even noticed it... Looked like a rock that was thr size of a VW beetle.

First time imhave ever seen or hear of one round here

Interesting.... Any idea where he comes from or does he live here year round?

The one up by Hornby has been around for years but the sightings elsewhere in the georgia strait have been rare until this year. I've spotted two of them in the middle of the trait this summer and posted about them.

these guys were once common around here in both in Georgia and Juan de fuca. They were hunted to extinction after the whaling went sour,they are making a comeback. Really cool animals they can dive over 90 minutes on a breath.

Biggest problem is that boaters will not leave them alone when they are hauled out on the beach. Stay clear and everything is good!
