Just wondering what weather is safe at sandheads with a 16.6 double eagle and 115 hp 2 stroke . Newish to ocean fishing any help would be great thanks. I launch out of Ladner
With that boat.... 15 knots max Northwest or southeast. And i would say if you go out on a falling tide and a NORTHWEST wind be extremely cautious. Anything over 10 knots in these conditions can be dangerous. You can get 6 foot standing waves quite easily in 15 knot nw winds.
New to ocean maybe test your skills out at the North arm McDonald beach launch and fish the north arm, get a
good sense of the water and safer exit if you need to get out of the wind, watch for the Fraser river alligators they
will chew your leg off..
There's a difference between safe and comfortable. Most boats can safely handle rougher waters than the occupants. That said, caution is wise; especially on the stretch between Steveston and Sandheads.
I try not to fish in anything more than 10 knots, boat can handle way more than I can. I am out their to relax and find a light wind forecast is the best for that. 5-15 is usually okay but check one of the many apps for more details.
Just a heads up for you about the north arm if you decide to use it. I've been running out of there since 2001. You will get the same standing wave conditions in a ebbing tide versus a NORTHWEST wind at the north arm as you will at the south arm. Granted, the conditions will probably be worse at the south arm. But they are definitely not pretty at the north arm. Been there done that.
