It ain't just BC who has demonstrous issues with DFO.

OMG, and this clown is in charge of our fish? Kiss them good bye! What a sad joke! Who would even hire this guy to sell tires? Sorry, no offence to any tire salesmen.

Codfish were the "dowry" for Newfoundland to enter Confederation? gimme a break! Commercial Fishing costs Canadian taxpayers $7.00 for every $1.00 we get back from taxation. It is time we faced the grim reality that commercial fishing is no longer economically viable , or the fishing industry has to start paying its fair share.

Hey GLG , My intention is not to slam fishers , but people have to be more realistic about the services the government provides vs the money that comes into the coffers. Here are the raw calculations.

DFO annual budget 1.8 billion

annual national catch value 1.6 billion

other services used by fishers .5 billion (this # is a ballpark , Transport Canada , Court Costs , Subsidies etc. this is a very low # in my opinion)

Estimate a 20% tax rate. (I am not calculating annual licensing fees paid by fishers because these costs are recoverable)

1.8 billion + .5 billion = 2.3 billion (cost of services provided annually)

1.6 billion x 20% = 320 million net tax collected

1 tax dollar collected for 7 dollars spent.

Obviously there are a huge # of variables , but I think these numbers represent a conservative ballpark figure.

Can't imagine any cuts for the DFO....doesn't bode well for the future of our fisheries. We have a unique opportunity to save our west coast fisheries while other fisheries around the world are in free fall. If managed properly the west coast of N. America could be a bastion of ocean productivity. Imagine how that could benefit everyone on the west coast now and in the future, so many possibilities. Between Alaska and BC there is a genuine opportunity to get this right. These bozos who run our Ministries should be held accountable in some way other than the obvious political consequences. History repeats itself far to often.
