Hmmm...

Might have to give her a go in Satellite Channel this weekend!

Area 18

Assessment of the Cowichan River is planned to continue next week, however high
flows and poor visibility may hamper assessment activities. The preliminary
escapement estimate is 5,000 to 10,000 based on initial in-river assessment.

Test fishing commenced on November 1, 2005, and does indicate some large
schools of chum in Area 18 (Satellite Channel). Test fishing will continue
next week.

No commercial fisheries are planned for Area 18 prior to the next mid Vancouver
Island Chum Sub-committee meeting.

From the DFO Chum notice. "Large Schools" sounds good!

its one of those things that makes you go hmmm...
I'll be there.unless its windy like yesterday

it must be something in the water

i was down at gov wharf on thursday and talked with the CAPT of the test boat , he said the fish are there but not in huge numbers yet , he said give it a week and they "should" be here. he also said that they're tagging fish ok , but fisheries hasn`t even set up the fish counter in the river , what a joke our fisheries are . why can`t they "GET THERE **** TOGETHER " what they're doing is a huge waste of money

Gooey, give me a mail. Look's like some big things over the next few weeks.-dirty

It's the body of water that lies between the south shore of Saltspring Island and the north shore of the Saanich Peninsula.

Area of water between sansum narrows(cowichan bay) and say,Fulford harbour/Swartz Bay.Between south end of salt spring across to North end of Sannich Penninsula and across to Cherry point. How does that sound? make sense?

it must be something in the water

Finally got out for a while today. The fish were concentrated in "large schools" (I'll say! About an acre big and thick like a school of huge herring!) in between Pat Bay and Mill Bay. Took a while, but once the bite came on we slayed for about 3 hours. Only two of us in the boat (and not a single other boat around!!) and we got in to three quadriple headers! Total of probably 30 fish hooked and maybe 20 landed. Only a guess, we stopped counting. What a blast! Most of the fish were were pretty colored up, but still fought like hell. Didn't bother to keep any (I need more salmon in the freezer like I need a hole in the head)but some looked like they would have been OK.

All fish caught on Pink & Blue squirts 36 - 42" behind a flasher. The type of flasher didn't seem to matter. We tried putting spin & glows in front of the hoochie but once the bite came on, that didn't seem to make any difference either.

Perhaps it was just time for the bite to come on anyway, but it seemed we really started to slay fish once we speeded up a bit. Talk about hits! Holy crap I've never seen a rod get slammed so hard. Very cool!

Depths were 20 - 80 feet right in the middle of the channel almost all the way in to Pat Bay.

I'll definitely have a go at this again!! Sure beats the micros you tend to hit for winters at this time of year, or the "living dead" you tend to get on the flow....

I'm still stoked. God I hate having to work for a living. Oh well, maybe next weekend they'll still be there....

Gooey.

test boat told me it`s gonna get better still , he said a week or so . What tide where you fishin when slammin

wow impressive report!
might have to give it a shot next weekend seeing as i wont be prawning now that someone stole all my traps...
where's the best spot to launch down that way?

wow! nice fishing. Ive never done chum, are you fishing right in the middle between mill bay and patricia bay? Whats the water depth? Are you around where the "T" is inbetween the two bays on this chart? Thanks! http://mapserver.maptech.com/homepa...maptech.com/homepage/index.cfm&latlontype=DMS

To fish or not to fish,
What a stupid question!
Give a man a fish and he will eat for a day, teach a man to fish, and he will sit on a boat drinking beer for a life time :D

Eagle Eyes--I'm not familiar with Mill Bay side but on the Peninsula you could launch from the Tsartlip launch, the reserve in Brentwood. Take West Saanich rd north through Brentwood and turn left on Stelly's. Once you get to the bottom of the hill on
Stelly's turn right into the reserve (past the soccer pitch) and you'll find the launch.Maybe someone can chime in with a launch site on Mill Bay side and save you the drive.

We launched at Cowichan Bay and since we hadn't had much luck in Sansum Narrows on recent outings, figured that we'd try the bay. No sign of anything after about an hour so we thought that there must be a schwack of Chum heading to Goldstream as well as the Cowichan hence the trip towards Pat Bay.

We started fishing more or less in the middle of the channel because we saw a few jumpers. Apparenly about one in 10,000 jump because there sure were a lot of fish concentrated in the area with only a few jumpers. More fish came on the deeper rods (60 & 80 feet) than the shallower ones (20 & 40 feet) so perhaps thats why.

We launched at a fairly high tide and fished through a good portion of the ebb.

This really was my first time have any real success at Chum fishing (we've caught up to 1/2 doz on previous outings when we were actually trying for them and I lucked in to a bunch about 10 years ago in the narrows mooching)so my guess is as good as yours as to what worked and what wouldn't.

It sure feels good to have luck working on your side once in a while! Thatys the best action I've had in years, and I visit the Charlottes at least three times a summer. My shoulders and forearms actually ache this morning!!

Good Luck. I wish I could be out there in the sunshine today...

I fished yesterday from 12 - 4:00.not a bite.We were around the test boat.Lots of fish around, jumping and swimming past the boat. One boat had two guys casting to them and seemed to be doing alright(snagging).
I'm gonna go out Friday and try again.Hope the weather holds.
If any one wants to trade cell #s and keep in touch on the water,E me.

it must be something in the water

I think Im going to have a go Firday too I fished the river on sunday and it was loaded with chum (ugly ones) Every time I would hook into one it would just head down stream peel line(20lb) and snap it they sure do fight .

Eagle Eyes I believe there is a boat launch right in mill bay behind millbay centre .I hope Its still there . Can anybody verify This?
