Commission recommends 28 percent cut to halibut haul

ANCHORAGE, Alaska -- Southeast Alaska's commercial halibut fleet faces what could be the lowest catch limit for halibut in 25 years.
The staff of the International Pacific Halibut Commission is recommending a cap of just under 4.5 million pounds.
That's 28 percent lower than this year's limit and less than half of the 2006 quota.
The recommendation for the Gulf of Alaska is lower as well, but not as severe.
Charter fishermen could also see their catch shrink. There is expected to be another push to limit southeast charter clients to one halibut per day.
