Boat Insurance - any advice or tips

Check your icbc policy. You might not be covered if the trailer is stolen. Normally everyone gets icbc to be able to tow behind your vehicle. Liability is attached to the tow vehicle unless the trailer becomes unattached in the event of an accident

Wondering since medical is $5000 if something were to happen and got hurt am I limited at $5000 in coverage for medical bills or good forbid someone died I would only be covered for $10000? Should know tomorrow, man they make this complicated, lol.

Believe your $2mill protection and indemnity is your coverage if someone else is injured or dies as a result of use of your boat..passenger or otherwise

Thanks slabjacker that’s what i was thinking but was wondering what the medical and death coverages meant, cheers

Thats a good point...can’t see why need that double counted unless you were only planning to insure your trailer for a portion of the year instead of a full year. If that was the case, having it on the boat policy would cover for theft in event it wasn’t insured thru ICBC I suppose. Also maybe ICBC wouldn’t cover for full valuation like the boat policy would in the event of theft. Will check into that.
Another consideration: if someone steals your trailer and you have comprehensive with icbc your premium won't go up. If you claim a trailer theft on your boat insurance your probably going to have to pay the deductible and your insurance is going up. I always insure my trailers through ICBC for fire/ theft/ vandalism and leave them off the boat policies. Small claims end up being being paid back in premium increases, often many times over. My 2 cents anyhow.

So this is what I am being led to understand by my broker and premier marine, medical $5000- should someone on my boat or myself get injured and I am at fault, I have coverage for their or my medical bills for up to $5000 (this does not seem right or enough and there is no option to increase this), Death- should someone associated with my boat die in a my fault accident I have up to $10000 in coverage (again seems like not enough). Then i am being told the liability of $2000000 is for any injuries or damage I cause to someone not on my boat or someone else's property. This seems right but the coverage to my people and myself seems wrong. Can anyone shed some light, am I missing something?

Thanks

Ended up excluding the trailer from the policy as I already have it covered under ICBC...dropped the rate down to $492 which seems best I can do and that was with Premier Marine.

I had my boat insurer take off the trailer a couple of years ago. It saved me $35 a year On a $4500 trailer. If I’d known that before i would just left it on. When I increased the valuation of my boat by $20k because of new motors they billed me an extra $220 per year.

I have bought my boat insurance through Dolphin insurance for a number of years. Very nice to deal with.
They understand marine insurance as that is all they did for a long time - I think they have recently expanded in to home insurance also.
Never been asked for a survey and never had a problem getting my boat insured for what it is worth.

But did you ever have any claims processed through them? They all can look nice on paper and most seem nice on the phone. But what happens when you need them?

theres only a few insurance companies left. you can get it thru hub insurance which uses intact. llyods exited the market. besides intact i dont think there are many more insurers left. note that insurers are different from brokers. the people you talk to are brokers getting quotes from insurers.
aviva might do it. and maybe RSA group. one broker can usually check all insurers. i know hub insurance does that for me -- they check all the insurers and get me quote options. last year they could only do intact.

Thankfully not and hopefully never, but they know marine insurance and understand my specific needs, i.e., I fish mainly offshore and want my policy to cover as far as my boat can go.
Most other brokers sell Autoplan, home insurance, life insurance, etc., they may be fine and sell the same policy in the end, but it is nice talking to specialists.

I had a claim with Dolphin last year and they handled it well, no problems and very efficient service. Probably not the cheapest out there but worth the piece of mind.

X2. I've had Dolphin for 10 years and through three claims. Always treated me well. Second claim was a break-in where a few other guys in the same marina got hit and I made out with far more stuff covered.
