Big story from the BIG Q

Well I managed to sneak out again last night for the Big Q fish and low and behold 5 minutes into the first pass bam and 10 minutes later a bright chrome, jumping lunatic spring was in the boat at a tidy 18lbs. We set the gear back down and trolled for an uneventful hour, while boat after boat showed up to a the tune of 50 boats at the BIG Q and another 20 at the Little Q I heard. Anyways right at 5:00pm another fish hits and he hits hard, taking line like there is no end in sight. Good news for us he's heading towards the closed fishing area and ther is only one boat between us and there. We are waving our arms and yelling att the guy to turn around as he trolling right for our fish who by this time had us almost to the backing. We now have all the rods and riggers up so I turn to chase after him and tell my buddy to keep the tension and we'll gain on him. Well wouldn't you know it the guy trolls right over our fish and it's wrapped around his rigger. He had so much time and space to get out of the way we were a little upset, but then he cranks up his rigger and bam nets the fish and we are so releived that he's in the boat, now it's only a formailty of getting our gear and fish back from the guy. Well he gave us back our gear and then started yelling at us for not controlling our fish and says that he caught it on his gear and he netted it so it's his fish! We are dumbfouned I've never seen this before the code of the fisherman and boating ettiquette were all out the window! so my buddy who's fish it was starts yelling at the guy to give us our fish and he says because it wrapped on his rigger and he netted it it's his. He was in a little 16 foot fiberglass boat all beat up and I'm in a new grady so I have to back off as he swings it hard and guns it away from us!! I'm in shock trying to figure out what the heck just happened if it's a dream and my buddy is irate and screaming at the guy! He's a big fatty who always is out there by himself with his shirt off, and all of a sudden my VHF is going nuts with guys all chiming in that they saw it all and it's our fish and what a ******* etc.... Then 5 different sets of boats fill us in on the same guy who has cut them off, pinched the cables on their riggers when he runs inot their gear etc... He is a wanted man and he's booking it for the boat launch. 5 minutes goes by and we are fishing again and listening to all the guys calling us on the VHF and Brian decides that we have to go get our fish and witnesses said they will follow us in. So we haul up our gear and gun it for the launch and there is the guys boat with his big pig wife holding it as she must have bee on shore waiting for him, he tells us we're not getting the fish and that he's going to go call the cops. So he heads up the ramp and my buddy won't go in his boat for fear of getting in trouble but we can see into his boat and see he has two fish ours and a teenager. He's by himself and there's 4 hours of fishing left and he already has one in the boat and he wants to keep ours!! NO WAY!! So we figure out that we can reach our fish with the gaff and we gaff him back onto our boat while his wife is swearing at us and telling us that we should be setting an example!! Ironic considering they are in there late 50's and we aren't quite 30. I told her repeatedly to call any boat out there on the VHF and see if anyone sides with her. when she wasn't even there. Every boat was prasing us upon our return with high fives radio salutes and the odd horn honking!! In the end the fish ended up being 29lbs and bright chrome with one gaff hole in the side! The cops never showed up and he was long gone when we came back at night to pull out. What a story and what a day! remember respect each other on the water and help each other out we are all brothers and sisters in the great sport of fishing! I will try to post a pic if I can figue it out!

Unbelievable story ,not that I dont' believe you, but the nerve of some people. I am very glad you got your fish back and would be curious to see if that guy returns to the same spot again or not.

But after all that what did you get the action on?

Hey SW, I 'm sure I saw him on Wednesday..couldn't figure out why this fat guy had his shirt off when the sun had just gone down behind the hills. He was cuttign right through the pact like he had a permanent right of way. Congrats on getting the fish back!

I wonder if that guys drain plug was still in after SW left? hee.hee.hee GOOD ONE SW I never met you,but that ones worth a pint on me!!

As if fishing isn't a challenge in itself you have to put up with idiots like that.Good on ya for getting your fish back.

Catch it,Kill it,Smoke it.

Way to go SWC!!!!!!!!!
Let's take a collective breath here, and make sure what comes around goes around. I'm sure that with enough people,he'll have to move onto some other area to fish.
Good on you and your friend to not just take this stuff.
Too bad your aim was too good, I would have probably missed the fish a couple times just for practice and popped a couple holes below the water line. Where were those bear bangers when you need them??? Seals aren't the only thing you can use them on.
You actually did him a favour by keeping him at his legal limit too!!

Correction....I just re-read your post in that he had TWO fish on board.
Tough to read your story with my jaw on the floor!

"Ironic considering they are in there late 50's and we aren't quite 30."

He's lucky he ran into a boat load of even tempered young guys</u>-you never know who's on the water ....<img src=icon_smile_evil.gif border=0 align=middle>

I'm in shock. Can't believe the nerve of those people. They are REALLY lucky you guys were as well tempered as you were. I would be happy to hand over the fish as would 99.9% of the rest of us in the same situation. Those people don't deserve the right to fish. It's a shame we have to fish amongst them. Thanks for reminding us about patience.

I think that guy stays at the campground for the season might be wrong. Good thing it wasn't me on wednesday night with my main motor blown and the other stuff thats been going on in my life I would have been alot less civil.... But I commend you with doing the right thing and am glad you got back what was yours, too bad people have to be that way !!!

Cheers My Escape Hope to see ya on the water again soon working on the main motor in the morning got two power heads tonight????? Hope I can make one out of three.<img src=icon_smile_tongue.gif border=0 align=middle>

Happy Hookin!!!

Hey guys, where are Big and Little Q? Are they in Sooke? Elsewhere?
Thanks,
Steve

Great story cowboy, people should always be considerate of others,Sometimesthere are mean little runts out there who wouldn't be as nice as you. hehe

thanks the runt

What a story! Just thught I should share something similar which happened to us a couple of weeks ago - but with a 180 degree "twist". We were trolling just West of the Lighthouse in Nootka Sound when we suddenly hooked up! All of you who have fished there know what a "zoo" it can be and how important it is to get on top of the fish as soon as possible.

Well, this fish didn't wait for us! A tremendous "rush" came immediately, and the reel turned "smoking" hot while we got the other gear out of the water. By the time the main engine was started, the line was pointing directly at a cluster of boats who all tried their best to get out of the way - with all their trolling gear still in the water.

While attempting to catch up to the fish we noticed that we were following this other boat, turn for turn, and realized we must be tangled in his gear! He stopped and started tugging on some of his lines.

"I can feel him", the other guy shouted to us. "If you stop I can try to sort it out!" After a while he managed to get all the lines un-tangled from the downriggers and he retrieved both cannonballs. But he had been trolling with FOUR rods so the rest was a terrible bird's nest! Everybody was now watching us as the guy got his knife out! "Start reeling as fast as you can when I let go!" he shouted and cut all of his own lines in one swoop! About 15 minutes later we netted a beautiful 25 pound Spring to applause from neighbouring boats, and a big smile from our helpful anonymous friend. Of the four sets of lures and flashers he had in the water, I think he must have lost most of it to save our fish!

What a show of the sport fisherman's unwritten code! Whoever you were my friend, we owe you not just flashers and lures, but you also deserve our gratitude, admiration and respect!

What a great story from the zoo that can be the lighthouse in Nootka Sound! That fisherman deserves applause from all of us as he is what we all should strive to be! Great to hear that all is not lost out on the water!

Hey Eagle..Costa Lotta resort has a boat launch ($10) just short of the Big Q. I hope to be out there thurs or Friday myself if the weather plays nice. I caught a big one trolling down only 30 feet with a pink and white hoochie...but they are taking anything i'm told.

ya went to costa lotta today...about 30 boats out there from 4-730 and saw maybe 5 fish taken...<img src=icon_smile_sad.gif border=0 align=middle>. typical i pick the one slow day in over a week to show up. oh well.
