40,000 escape

First off, the company seems to have no problem scooping up and being in possession of wild fish when it's time to move brood stock or take product to the plant. When they decide to carry out their business, the issue of illegal possession doesn't seem to slow them down. But when it comes to collecting up their own fish which will require added costs for disposal, all of a sudden it is an issue.

Secondly, it must be a condition of the farming licences that there is a recovery plan in the event of an escape that includes a recovery vessel because DFO issues the ZZA licences for this purpose. There are a total of 5 ZZAs issued for this year. Marine Harvest has three for farms spread all over the coast from north of Klemtu to Saltspring Island. Mainstream and Grieg have one each. Both have farms on both sides of Vancouver Island.

Hard to imagine this as an effective recovery plan. But, hey, not their fault if that's all that is required!

Lastly, the ratio of potential incidental wild fish caught to farmed fish recovered would be a lot different if the recovery operation was started ASAP when farmed fish were still schooled up instead of waiting for a boat with the same equipment to arrive after the farmed fish have dispersed.

Guys,

I can't disagree with what you are saying. They should have acted sooner, and for Backman to say what he said is embarassing. As I have already stated, they should be charged, fined and made to satisfy DFO or the provinec that they have aplan in place to stop more escapes. If it happens again, then the punishment goes up, which could include having to vacate the site.

Rico,

There are always problems even in Closed Containment.
