Made the trek out to Sidney early this morning. Had 6 fish on while jigging. Kept a nice hatch around 17lb. Bite was from 7:30-9. Then went quiet for us.
Was a ton of fun on the spinning rods. My sons first salmon jigging and he hooked 4 of 6.

Never fished Area 18-7, 19-7, 19-8 for Chinook. Looks like its open June 1 - July 31 for 1 Hatchery over 62 cm. Has anyone had any success in these regions and if so where is a good starting spot. example Wain Rock? and Depth are fish higher or deeper?

It’s also open in the gap between the peninsula and Saltspring to Piers Island in area 18-6. I’ve never fished in that area however and never heard of people targeting salmon in that area. It would be nice to think that there is another spot to catch salmon before August!

18-6 looks closed on the dfo website May 31st. Are you reading it differently somewhere?

I have seen people trolling around Wain Rock but usually back along lands end which also is in 18-6.

Hopefully someone else has some info :)

Yes the majority of 18-6 is closed except some coordinates that pin points on Saltspring,(Isabella point) Piers island and the Peninsula.

Yes 18-6 is closed after today. That is why I asked about 18-7, 19-7 and 19-8. But I have never heard anyone fishing in that area except prawning and crabbing.

Ok to understand this closure I see that area 19-6 closes today. Is this just for retention or can it still be fished but just catch and release? I was hoping to run up to Sydney for the weekend with the wife.

I'm also curious as I'd like to practice my fishing skills and have fun with the kids catching and releasing.

Where do you see that? I'm just trying to figure it out so I know too. I don't see a sub region on dfo or the fishng app. @Ldub

Thank you

A good day today all though not bonkers action like last weekend. Out today for the last day of hatchery retention with guests from Atlanta. We were into 6 fish from 7am till 1 pm. Landed a 15 and a 12 and the other 4 out smarted us and got away...we only saw one and it was maybe just legal. At least 2 of the others were good fish which fought similar to the two we kept. Skinny G's right on the bottom at Coal Isl. Counted 11 boats there today...the most all month. Got the 12 pound fish just as we were pulling geat to quit. Both mature females...the 15 had a real summer fish look to it and the roe was already quite large for May.

Yeah I am not sure where this 18-6 Opening you speak of. I see the write up of it. But can't seem to figure out where all the points lead to I assume its a very small area.

That portion of Subarea 18-6 west of a line from Isabella Point on Saltspring Island (48 degrees 44.0239' N, 123 degrees 25.5622'W) to a point on Piers Island (48 degrees 48.4586'N, 123 degrees 25.3965'W) then to a point on the Saanich Peninsula near 48 degrees 41.8550'N, 123 degrees 26.1056'W.

Like I said before, it adds the gap between SaltSpring and the Peninsula up to Piers Island to area 18-7.
